Do flowmasters really hurt hp?
I have been seeing a lot of threads lately about how flowwmasters hurt your hp. Is there any truth to this? I have the American Thunder on mine but I was thinking about taking them off and going straight pipe. Any benefits to this?

I'm sure it's not ALL FM's but i'd bet some of them are fairly restrictive. As far as yours, I have no idea. Just wanted to chime in to say that it doesn't hold true across the entire product line.

Not all and depends on the setup. I know i gained 37rwhp by removing my FM for a 4" catback but then again I was running a nice lil turbo.

spacecowboy, that hood you have on there hurts your HP too. You should do a straight up trade with my stock hood. That hood is sexy! Is that the Sinister or MPD1?

There is minimal gains/losses if any from MOST exhaust systems.... That said, the main thing typically affected is the back pressure which can make it FEEL slower......but you really are not losing anything...
Unless you are moving massive amounts of air (BIG NA or FI) then the performance out of an exhaust system(s) is minimal at best. |

Didn't mess up his mod setup so I think you are good.....
The only thing I seen people do was lose back pressure from getting it too big which will effect torque numbers.......

At what point will a larger catback affect your tq numbers?

It always depends on how much is pushed out of the front end.....
Some don't believe in it but I only go by what I have seen racing over the decades...... some back pressure seems to keep the torque numbers up a bit.... not crazy pressure.... I know this a hot button so everyone will take a side so I won't argue with different perspectives....... I think explaining this in the manner of stepped headers or 1 3/4 headers or 1 7/8 headers or Y 1 7/8 headers..... they all do well but the 1 3/4 will get you out hole but the 1 7/8 if it has enough distance will catch ya..... The step headers will do it all in getting you out the hole and run away... But it all comes down to the driver as well..... Having said that getting back on topic I think going above 3" in exhaust might be much if you aren't adding much in the mods RWHP department.....

If you're worried about backpressure, do what I did and get the HP series muffler (Originally the Flowmaster Hushpower).
Baltimore John is correct. I can probably contact someone from Flowmaster get them in here and give you specifics if you wish. |
