Car covers & crazy weather

With yesterday's spike in temperature and humidity after the cold streak we've had, I noticed my car cover was pretty damp - wet in in some places. The car was literally dripping with condensation under the cover. I just have a GM lined indoor cover and store in an unheated garage... who knew the thing was such a humidity sponge. So, I pulled it off and threw it in the dryer since I didn't want it to freeze to the car when temps drop off again tonight.

Just thought I'd mention it in-case there's any other NEC5'ers out there storing the same way this winter.

I've noticed this also a few times. I do the same by pulling the cover off for awhile.

Why not by an outdoor cover for this reason? I no the out door covers are a ruff material but you should only have to put it on then take it off once a year.

I figured an indoor cover would be more breathable and less likely to trap moisture.

I've never heard of this happening. Mine is an indoor cover and my garage is not heated. But it is attached to the house, insulated, sheetrocked, mudded, taped, painted etc. Could that be why it's never happened to me?

Yes this happens to me as well. My garage is not heated but attached to the house. The other day it got really warm with a lot of rain and humidity. My cover got very damp all around the bottom. I use an outdoor cover which works great and dries much quicker than an indoor cover.

Did you put plastic sheeting or tarps on the floor under your cars? That may be the problem. Condensation is being released from the cold floor meeting warm air and rises up under the car and is trapped by the cover.

Sure did, covered the cars footprint with another 2' or on each side. Not sure it was avoidable given the huge temperature swing (without insulating and heating the garage). I just didn't expect the cover to soak up as much moisture as it did.

Unless there's something generating a lot of dust in your garage, why use any cover at all?

Besides, dust on the car is better than a chronically wet cover.

As you may have guessed, I don't use a cover in my unheated garage.

So bringing this thread back up. Todays temp nearing 60 and about a foot of snow outside made everything in my garage sweat.

I was shocked when i got home to find everything dripping with condensation and got scared to look at the car. And yes, the car was soaked!!

Damn freaky weather.

Car cover is the Cover King satin stretch indoor cover. But like i said everything was wet from top to bottom in the whole damn garage

This post made me go out and check, but nope, everything dry as a bone. It was almost 60 here, lot of snow outside, unheated garage. This phenomena has never happened to me. No plastic under the car, just carpet. Hell, I keep the snow blower in there too, always put it away covered in snow, never had any moisture on the car or cover. No clue why this doesn't seem to happen to me.
