He went from burning oil to burning coal, and doesn't seem to realize that there isn't a difference when it comes to the environment. I should add that he said to me that he was "no longer burning fossil fuels"

There is a significant difference in overall carbon emissions for each mile of transit. Coal only supplies about half of the electrical energy used in the US. The quote you used from Musk is terribly out of context.

Almost all of the electricity in central MD comes from coal...
