Any Stock 10 second cars?

My stepson sent me a link to a 1LE 600 Hp Camaro and said he wanted it, then another link to a modded 1997 RX7 listed at $24k. He's 16 and just kind of getting into cars. I don't know much (actually nothing) about racing, I read a few threads here and there, but that's where it ends. He's the same. So we start chatting about it, he likes the GT, explained that's a mustang. I did explain that what I know about Camaro's, is it takes a lot of money to mod the car to get it to 10s. I believe this is the case with mustangs as well, but I haven't searched.

Are there any cars that come stock to hit 10s? This is not meant to cause a flaming war at any one particular brand of vehicle, just trying to educate him a bit. This may motivate him to improve his grades, he's going to need a good job to get a "sick" car. Maybe a porche or Ferrari (these are way way way out of his price range)? I have no idea.

I've asked him why he wants a 10 second car, is he planning on racing it at the track as street racing is illegal. He didn't really give a solid answer, just that he wants a "sick" car, so, more like bragging rights.

He's also talking about going into mechanics, which is great for him to learn how everything works together and if he knows how, he can do all his own mods to his own car....

Kinda cool he's talking to me about this stuff and not his dad.... so any help or advice is appreciated.

That's awesome - THANK YOU ....I think this will be an eye opener for him. I'll give him the list and let him do some research!!!

I've tried telling him!!! But he's the Gen Y mentality and not understanding the value of the $$. We are by no means rich, he's gonna have to pay to play!!

So he'd be better off finding an older vehicle and fixing it up, essentially. Read another thread here on the same subject, he'd be looking at say $10k give or take, depending on the vehicle obviously.

I wonder if he's being realistic...in any event, its a good goal to try to achieve and he's gotta start somewhere!!!

What about getting a late 90s or early 00s Camaro/TransAm and modding it? 03/04 Cobras run high 12's stock so that's a more expensive option

What car does he have now?
If I could do it again - I would do some driving classes. Take him to events like AutoX and NHRA racing. Make sure he respects the power of any car and don't go over his limits. Having a "sick" car I guess is "fast". Bring him to reality cuz he doesn't seem to know what he wants. Don't want him to get hurt when he is driving these cars.

When I was 16 I test drove a Cobra with bald tires( could've ended bad), SRT-8s, GTI / GLI, VR4s and more.
Maybe start out small ... I started with a VW.

When I was 17 I was going to buy a '95 Firehawk... until I discovered that insurance would be $475 a month. This is another factor your stepson could be oblivious to. I ended up with a '99 V6 Camaro and now, after the fact, I'm glad I started with the V6 because there were a few instances where I probably would have died if I had that 350hp V8 rather than the 200hp V6. Here I am 10 years later and I've driven cars with 800+rwhp and raced a few with 500+rwhp and I'm just now getting my own V8 to drive daily.

I like the idea and will share with him.

He doesn't even have his learner's yet so no car. He had a pretty rough year last year and is finally showing interest in life again. He's a great kid, but has been bullied for years (he's not very big/tall) and last year he let it get to him and paid a pretty heavy price for it (nothing serious, but had consequences). Taking him to an event is a fantastic idea and you are right, its one thing to brag about a car, its another to be able drive it. "Sick" = fast lol. I think the car thing is something he sees that may make him cool for right reasons - as long as he doesn't run his mouth....

I've touched base with someone on another forum who has a ricer car, talking about selling and rebuilding a different car. He's local and may be a great person to meet/chat with. I've also told him (my son) he should come out on some of the cruises in the spring and the local show and shine show, to really see some amazing cars, not just Camaros.

I like where this thread is heading and its more than just about a car. Your responses have me thinking about this a bit differently than my original post intended, thank you.

There are a lot more than that list too especially if you want to include a tire swap since a lot of cars are just limited by tires.

c6z has gone 10s bone stock and can be had for ~$35k for a high mileage one, $40 for a nice clean one. GTRs have gone 10s stock.

That being said, only way I would buy a kid a 10 second car is if I didn't like them and took out a big insurance policy on them.

You shouldn't buy him a fast car no matter how much you wanna spoil him. It's the fast track to it being wrapped around a telephone pole. Been there.

Whether getting a 10 second or "sick" car is attainable or not, it's still really good and healthy for him to develop these kind of interests and share a bond with someone about it, so kudos to you for letting that develop.

Going to car events/meets and things like that really are great social environments. Not to mention it will expose to him to a lot of different cars. Not that Camaros aren't great, it's my favorite as I own one, but he seems to be just starting to get into them and broadening your horizons is never a bad thing. Although if he ends up liking camaros the best, thats awesome too.

In my opinion, getting a slightly used car and modding it is the cheapest way to get a super fast car. It's also great for bonding, that kind of stuff can't help bring people closer. It's just kind of that way and it's awesome. Plus you'll learn so much about your car and it will feel more unique to you, you will also feel more proud for your ride. Definitely can boost self confidence. Modding my camaro has done the same for me.

Good luck on whatever you do though!

No no no, we won't be buying him a 10, 11, 12, 1 minute car. He's got a lot to learn and buy no means mature enough for such a car. I havent let any of my kids drive my car.....we have 2 with their licenses. My thread started as wanting to provide him with some reality on what such a car looks like. If he wants to build one, he'll learn his hard earned money is worth something, take better care of it and learn to respect it. The cost and time to do this for him would take a few years. That's some blood sweat and tears tied up in a car.
