Wanted..... err.... a Camaro !

Hi All
As my earlier thread said I don't actually have one yet... but I want one.

I fear I may have missed out on Stray Bullit's car and although Scites car sounds awesome I don't think it's for me.

So if you're selling and want your Camaro to go to a good home... I'm yer man.

What am I looking for:

Ideally
Colour: White, yellow or silver

Trim Level: LT1 or better.... basically want fogs, leather gear knob.... seats would be nice in leather too (but I can get cloth ones retrimmed)

Engine: V6 (probably given my budget, etc)

Miles: Lowish 40k or less preferably

History: Yes please

Price range: up to £19-20k

So, if you're moving on from Camaros (can't think why, though) or upgrading to a newer, higher spec model then please let me know.

I'm based in Glasgow but can and will travel.

I know there is a for sale and wanted section but though that given the UK is quite a small part of the site I'd have more chance of getting lucky on the main UK forum.

Cheers
Bluey

:-) Ha Ha
eBay or look at my list here and phone about.

On hind-site I'd offer 15% less.
With the T4 Movie and C6 coming prices are gonna drop.

I have recently purchased a Camaro from the states and had it shipped (although still waiting for delivery from the UK guys).

I used the american autotrader and found a cracker of a car 2011 2SS RS for £15,000. I made sure the search parameters were within a certain distance from the port the car was to be exported from which kept the costs down, I found there was plenty of choice.

The most expensive part of the export was our customs & VAT.

One thing I found, in the States fuel is at an all time high and a lot of Americans are selling their gas guzzlers very cheap (also the pound is fairly high which is good news).

So what does that come out at all fees payed & on your doorstep ?
I spent about 2 yrs, umming & arring which way to go & ended up buying one already over here, as the bit of saving didn't seem worth the gamble/hassle.
I was looking at cars here in the 25 to 27k bracket & when looking at similar cars to import, by the time all the fees were paid, I'd save about £1500, which I didn't think was worth the bother.

Hi Ego
I've been looking on autotrader.com and much like Jules I'm looking at one already here to save hassle.
How easy was it to get someone to sell for export? Was it a private sale or a dealer? As far as I know you don't have to pay local taxes if you are shipping the car out of the US.
I'd be really grateful for any details you can give on your experiences.

Regards
Bluey

All in all the total is about £23k, but that includes everything, car, shipping, IVA testing + converting, under car sealing, DVLA registration, Customs, VAT, Road Tax and MOT. And like you said we don't pay any of their taxes.

One thing though I wasn't aware of, the price advertised from dealers is not the price they sell the car at, they will try to stiff you for additional "prep" costs but you haggle those. At the end of the day they are desperate to shift the cars, I got below advertised price and got them (the dealer) to deliver the car to the port at no cost saving me a small fortune.

I do tell I lie though it was "cars for sale" where I found the car, bought it through a dealership specialising in performance cars, they were easy and great to deal with, they sent me all the images & mpegs of the car I needed etc..

The only bad thing is all the waiting..

Hope this helps.

Found this..

works out about £12660 and is within 75miles from Port Elizabeth (which is one of the major ports on the east side).

I'm with you Jules. I bought new and at first the US list price looked very appealing. After adding everything in and taking account of having a new car adapted and losing the warranty, it just wasn't for me. If you take Tim's car as an example (which you could actually kick the tyres on before parting with cash) there's so little in it. Problem is of course there aren't many (if any) over here.

I hadn't tried Cars For Sale.... oh well there goes a few hours of Wednesday then.

Thanks for all the input and messages guys. I'm glad I found this forum, I think it'll help take some of the fear factor out of shipping a car across the world and trhen owning a car that there aren't many of in the UK.

Cheers

Stray Bullit must have the Bentley by now. I'm sure this is his. I so wish my missus wasn't averse to yellow and I'd registered here sooner.... could have been in that myself. If your reading SB hope the new motor is giving you a real buzz driving it.

1) Tell your missus your first Camaro has to be yellow, like your first Ferrari has to be red !
2) Offer the dealer £18,500 - you don't need to see it - Tim will have looked after that as good as any car you'll buy.
Worth a try on both counts!
