yes a 305 will fit

305/35/20 is what you will need to run to make it fit right

overall diameter is 28.4"

the stock 275/40/20 is 28.7"

So you would be fine.

So with that on the rear, what would I have to run on the front stock rim to keep the ride height relatively close to factory setting? Going as wide as possible.

for a stock front wheel.......the largest I would go would be 265/40-20. but if you want....get another pair of rear wheels and run 275/40's

The overall diameter of a 305/35/20 is 28.4"

I would pair that with a

265/40/20 which is 28.4"

Tire size

If a 265/40 is ok to run on a stock 8 inch rim, can a 275/40 be run safely on a 8.5 inch front rim?

Yes you can run a 275/40/20 on the stock wheel the difference is very slight in overall diameter

265/40 28.4" diameter

to

275/40 28.7" diameter

It will work but officially you would want a 9 inch rim to run a 275 according to the tire rim width range.
