Question Charging system not functioning

I am having a problem with my charging system. the alternator was recently rebuilt to 120-140amps because i thought that was the cause but when i put it on it still wasnt working. it is a 2 wire alternator, with one wire(brown) going to the gauge, and a red wire that i am not sure of where it goes to. when the car is being boosted the voltmeter reads the proper voltage but other than that it says only around 6-8 volts. The alternator works because it was tested when rebuilt but, it isnt putting out any voltage to the battery. Also, my temperature gauge is not functioning either. any help? thanks
