Long Tube Headers Installed.....Couple questions

I just finished up my header install and I just took it for a ride. First thing, man is it LOUD! I used to have the fuse pulled for the exhaust but I had to put the fuse back in.

About 2 mins of idling, the CEL came on. I did not install cats. Is that normal to come on ao fast?

Next, the black rubber boot on the steerinf shaft is touching the header. Did you guys remove the boot? The shaft itself isnt contact the header just the boot.

Last, the car actually seems a little slower down low and really all over. I assume that is just the tune being off.

You need to make adjustments in the tune since you have no rear 02 sensors, etc. Yes that is normal and to be expected. Some headers have a clearance issue with the boot and you can cut that off. Mine had no issues with it in place. You prob lost 1-2psi of boost with the headers. With tuning you will prob pick up 10-20hp after it's all said and done.

No it's not normal to throw a code for the headers that fast. Check you connections. Something is unplugged. What CEL code is stored? That is also probably why it's not running good.

Even with the rear o2s disconnected it wouldnt throw a code that fast? It seems to idle fine and doesnt feel horribly slow, just seems like it lost a little low end torque.

Well, yes. If you just left the connectors hanging disconnected under there it will throw a code pretty quick.

Granted I don't have a ZL1, but my CEL came on in under 5 minutes.

Yeah i just zip tied the connectors up out of the way. Would it be better to plug the rear o2 sensor in and then zip tie them? There are no rear bungs

The CEL can illuminate fairly quickly as the catalytic converter efficiency code will appear if the cats aren't present. I ran my Z/28 with a stock tune and headers and found the CEL light sometimes took 10 min to appear and other times almost immediately after the code was cleared.

this is why the code appeared immediately...open circuit. Once you get a tune, it won't matter. Just leave the rear 02s off.

Are your Headers Coated? I cut mine and wish I had not as I haven't seen any melt yet, but mine is not a DD.

When I installed my Kooks, the rubber boot contacted one of the header down tubes, so I decided to cut it off. No issues, especially since I live in AZ and the road conditions are as clean as you can get most of the time.

Exactly. If they were plugged in it might be a couple days before the CEL light comes on. It takes awhile for the PCM to run the self tests before it figures out something is off.
After turning off all the secondary O2 codes in the tune it's a non issue.
My Kooks headers have the post cat bungs so I kept everything plugged in. It just seems cleaner even though the PCM ignores them.
