Coolant plug - what is the coolant port and it's there a plug available to fit it

Good afternoon.
I installed a 2015 Camaro SS 6.2L in a 1955 Chevy Bel Air.
The picture is a coolant port in the block on the driver's side front.
The port is threaded. I'm not sure what the port is and what it was used for, but know if needs to be plugged.
Does anyone know what is and if a plug is available?

Yes, the OEM GM part number is 12561663. It’s a M28-1.25 mm brass plug, with a 17 mm hex Allen socket head. It should come with cured red thread locker on the threads of the plug. I’m assuming you are not going to run the factory water-to-oil cooler, or have gotten a crate engine and are going to run a custom air-to-oil cooler setup (or none at all).

I can’t recall, but there may be a new revised part, which simply has white thread sealant instead of the older red-colored thread locker. Should be the exact same part/concept… For those who had to remove the factory oil cooler lines, the original aluminum coolant engine block fitting was a PITA to remove, and required a 34 mm metric hex socket.

I actually added some teflon/PTFE tape to the brass fitting, when I first installed it, since I was paranoid of coolant leaks. I ended up hand-tightening it, as it doesn’t need more than about ~25 ft/lbs of torque, if I remember correctly..

Off topic, but I believe up to 2011, there were a batch of SS models that had cross-threaded aluminum coolant block fittings. Some people were sure unlucky, with some even needing a whole block to be replaced…. Talk about assembly line defects!

The plug I used actually comes with a sealing washer. Just an FYI.

Do you have the part number? I can’t recall exactly, but I know some companies sell some of their own branded ones, so there's some aftermarket options. I can’t recall if yours was an OEM plug though.

Either way, even with the sealing washer, I’d probably be paranoid enough and would use thread sealant or some teflon tape. Was it a form of a crush washer or?

Kinda gives it a little "flair" LOL
