Woke up to find scratch on my car

So I woke up to a nice scratch in my door the other day - I cringe about it every time I think about it.

It's a pretty deep scratch, and the 4 shops I visited last Friday claimed they couldn't do a whole lot about it other than take the whiteness out of the scratch. I talked to my local dealer and he said to come in on Monday so their expert can take a look at it and give me a quote.

I've never had a nice enough car to even be worried about scratches, but now that I do, I don't know the best approaches in getting it fixed. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should try other than what I've got planned? I'm going into the dealership again tomorrow and will have some before and after pics if they are able to do anything.

It doesn't look too bad in the photos, but it's very noticeable in person.
Here's a couple 'befores':

don0fthedead: How unfortuntate!!! It appears from the photos that a repaint of the door will be necessary. Do it now before surrounding body panels fade. Hope you find a solution you will be able to accept.

Scratch removers from the stores are actually scratch fillers. Wash it a couple times and the scratches reappear. I think you'll need that repainted it looks damn deep.

I agree, you can try an experienced rotary detailer to see if maybe he can wet sand and buff the crap of it out to minimize the damage before all out re-painting.

But it looks deep from the pix, it will likely need it anyways.

If it is not down to the base metal and you want to lesson the look of the scratch, and would like an easy method to try yourself. I recommend Quixx.

You can get that stuff at Walmart, and it really does work.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I will take it into the shop today and see how much it will cost me to get it re-painted (I'm assuming this is what will be proposed to do).

Anyone know around how much it'll cost? If it's too expensive, I may have to live with trying some of the mentioned solutions myself.

If you wanted to try, Quixx is $15

At least TRY To polish it out before jumping all the way to repainting... no sense in throwing the baby out with the bath water. If you can find a qualified person to wetsand I'm about 90% sure based on the look of it that it could be fixed... perfect example is Junkmans job on this shelby:

I've used Quixx before but it was for VERY minor scratches. And it still barely got them out. I don't see it working here but by all means, for $15 bucks it's worth a shot!

I definitely agree, you should work up from the least expensive options upward to repainting. You could always take a road trip to Kentucky and beg Mr. Junkman to help

Good luck, I can't tell you how often I think about what I would do if I came out of work and saw a scratch like that. Some people have no respect and think if they can't have a nice car, nobody should.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, it's helped out a lot. I visited the dealer yesterday and they got their 'expert' to take a look at it. Their expert is just a guy from a shop right up the road from the dealer. Whenever someone comes in with a scratch, they can just call him up and he comes over.

Anyways, after feeling it up intensely for a minute or so, he was able to give me a couple options and some prices. Option 1 was wet-sanding it and buffing. He said up front that he could get MOST of the scratch out, but there's a total of about an inch of deep scratch that would just have to be touched up. This would run at $80.

Option 2 was the repainting of the door. This would cost $495 and he told me would reduce the re-sale value of my car by quite a bit.

So since he was there and available to do it, I figured I could live with a smaller, lesser noticeable scratch. I paid the 80 bucks (I wasn't able to shop around, but I found it worth the convenience & peace of mind).

Once I get off work, I can upload some pics. It doesn't look quite nearly as good as junkmans, but at least I can stop worrying about it so much.
