What happens when you break a half-shaft during a run?

When a friend's car lost both at the same time at the line it just rolled to a stop. What if one goes out will the car pull hard to one side violently?

If one goes out the car will more or less just stop. The differential will let the other wheel spin very shortly due to the limited slip effect, but then you'll just spin the diff and go nowhere.
