Red Light Encounter: 1st-gen Mustang

So last night i decided to go out for a little cruise, right before sunset. As I made my rounds, picked up a few items from CVS, and took the long way home.... i decided to cruise through downtown Royal Oak (for those of you who are from the Detroit area)....

And I come up on a 1st-gen Ford Mustang. White w/ blue flames ( ruined the car in my opinion, but gave me a good laugh )

There were teenagers driving the car, and as soon as their buddy in the back seat turns around and notices my Camaro the old engine starts revving. The mustang driver continues this for a few blocks until we get to a stop light.
As im sitting at the light, he keeps revving his engine, which doesnt exactly sound the best... but its clearly stroking his ego. So i look over and say "nice car.." after all.... it was (before the flames got on it) yet he keeps obnoxiously revving. Keep in mind, in this area... he's asking for a cop to pull him over, as they are everywhere in this area (25mph speed limit).

If i was a few years younger (im 24) I may have obliged him. However, im too busy laughing at the fact that my "quiet little V6" would leave his car broken and in the dust. So the light turns green, and i continue on my way, and neither of us gun it. But even driving calm and slow to 25mph, he manages to drag way behind. And on my way home, i pass 4 different cops along the 2-minute drive home.

While my story doesnt have a wild or funny conclusion.... im just glad i grew out of my "gotta race everyone" phase... and let it die with my Civic.

And DAMN....... do I love this car!!!

Im a teen and I wouldn't have even raced him The most Id do is prolly an extra 5 miles over the limit so he;d fall behind and than go back to the regular speed limit

Grandeos. My thoughts exactly man, Im 24 (as of last month) and I think im finally out of that phase as well, though I still pick up the gauntlet from time to time (depends on my mood). In all honesty, its just not worth it, I'd much rather enjoy my cruise or punch it on an empty road than shatter some kids dreams while risking my life and ride on a whim.

Keep on rollin

Reving the LS3 a little is all it normally takes to discourage most pinheads at a red light.

haha yea.... if I had a LS3 i would have revved right back.... but no point revving the V6. I'd be the only one who would hear it lol. Doesnt matter though.... i still would have smoked him..... with or without 2 extra cylinders.

Things must have sure changed in Royal Oak. I grew up at 13 mile and Woodward. Hung out at the Elias Bros Big Boy with my Barracuda. Never a cop anywhere, and non-stop factory sponsored drag cars every night on the big W. Safer now, but more fun then.

Good story. A mutual exchange of respect for muscle cars 40+ years apart. I am all for thumbs-upping/waving/revving to other enthusiasts when I am in my 68. It's all part of the bond.

I wouldn't have lied to the kid and called it a nice car. But, good on you none the less. Last drag racer I saw was wrapped around a parked semi tractor trailer with a dead passenger in the front and dying one in the back (both of which were brothers 17, and 19).

Point is... it's not worth it no matter what car you're in.
