New "Engineering Information" from GM about 2nd gear grind!

1 Attachment(s)
Hopefully this gets something done! I've kinda learned to drive around the problem, but apparently with the recent wave of recalls GM is learning to suck it up and accept some responsibility.

My dealership called me this morning to make sure it was okay to send my information in for this. :happyanim:

The only problem I see is that this is for 2012-2014 only. And in big, bold letters - THIS IS NOT A RECALL.

Fish-man 07-11-2014 10:53 AM

Says that engineering is trying to determine the root cause. Step in the right direction.

I know, but this at least means they're looking into it. I'm glad I complained about it, even though I knew there wasn't a "fix" for it yet.

Hopefully something comes around for this, and hopefully they backdate it for the 2010-2011 guys/gals, too.

TommyTheCat 07-11-2014 12:15 PM

For all models, not just V8 or V6?

sspolo 07-11-2014 02:04 PM

If there is a recall and it affects the V6 the I hope its after the keys recall or it'll be weeks before I get the car.

Vroom_vroom 07-17-2014 06:24 PM

Have a appointment at the dealer for our other camaro tues. Will have to see of I can get some details!!

MiSTER 07-20-2014 04:02 PM

I really don't understand why this is only for 2012-2014 cars...

The only ones covered by warranty is my guess.

Camaro_Corvette 07-20-2014 06:23 PM

Would be great if they would fix mine. I've never heard so much noise from a trans before.

Powertrain would be covered under their 5year/100K warranty, which as of right now through next year for 2010's and the year after next for 2011's, would be covered...

That's a valid point!
If I hear of anything happen, I'll post the second I hear the news. Hopefully something comes of this.

Ya i been living with a bad first and second since new.. seems better after its warm or when you give it throttle while clutch is in.. seems like synchronizers to me!

Camarodave66 07-22-2014 10:49 AM

Ya, I noticed my 2014 has the rattle when pushing in the clutch and coasting in first and notchy shifting in to first and 2nd. I only have about 960 miles on it.

shank0668 07-22-2014 11:27 AM

Isn't 2nd gear on a 6 speed usually a little problematic?

BLTZKRG 07-22-2014 01:12 PM

Im at 700+ miles now...i will say its a ba*tard to get in to 1st/2nd when its cold...fine and smooth when warm but until its up to temp its quite notchy.
Wondering if a poly trans mount and an mgw shifter will help with this....as well as a fluid change to redline D4. I did have alittle throw out bearing noise yesterday morn...with clutch in car in neutral....pushed clutch in noise went away...release clutch noise again.
Seemed to go away after warm up. Wondering if master cylinder/resrvoir and braided line are the cure. Didnt do it today...about same weather conditions also.

niteshtadepalli 07-22-2014 02:50 PM

I have the same problem on my v6 manual when going into first or second gears.

BLTZKRG 07-22-2014 03:03 PM

I dont have a grinding....yet....but it is very hard to get into 1st/2nd gear cold.

niteshtadepalli 07-30-2014 11:04 AM

Even I don't have the grinding, but very hard to get into 1st/ 2nd gear. I have taken my car to the dealership and they have inspected it and verified that the car has that problem. They have asked a third party person who has a lot of experience with performance cars to check the car and even he confirmed the existence of the problem. But they say that they don't have a fix yet and I have to live with the problem which is ridiculous. I hope GM does something to fix this.

TheHorse13 07-30-2014 11:13 AM

GM is too busy handing out 20 year old ignition keys.

OUTATIME 08-12-2014 06:10 AM

Any new info on this? I would love to get this fixed before my power train warranty expires.

Destructo09 08-12-2014 04:05 PM

Mine has the same issue on occasion. Unfortunately for me my drivetrain warranty is expired.

I'm just going to have it built from Tick Performance once it gets too bad.

PR325xi 08-14-2014 04:00 PM

mine is just difficult to put in to 1st if the car is moving lets say 10mph or more, but I don't have problems with 2nd that I know of.

BLTZKRG 08-14-2014 06:32 PM

Mine is a bear to get into 1st when its cold...even if i wait til temp gets 150-160°....Lately 3rd gear has been having the CAGS lock out issue....doesnt matter if its 15mph or 45...happened 3x's this week so far...just for a split second that lockout happens....never get cags message on dic either....no wonder guys are blowing motors. I hope the cags eliminator solves this or else its going in. Getting alittle concerning especially since i plan to increase power output. Hoping this wont turn out to be an expensive waste of money/time. I will also add the clutch has a mind of its own and as soon as my truck is road-worthy the clutch will be getting some parts upgrades.

New "Engineering Information" from GM about 2nd gear grind!

I didnt mention, when shifting from 1st to 2nd takes more time than other gears, like it stops and then goes to second, I just don't force it

EmeryZ28 08-15-2014 06:42 AM

I have zero issues with my 6 speed, other than on ocassion if I do a quick 1-2nd shift, I get a little grinding, but it always goes into gear. Is that oen of the things they are talking about? sounds like a tremec issue, not GM

mine hasn't grinded ever in second but at low rpms its stop before going all the way in, I thought it was normal. Yesterday it grinded a little going into firs but maybe that was me not pushing the clutch all the way.

shibbs 09-25-2014 05:56 PM

Brought my car in to the dealer for this, finally. Tech drove the car. Left it with them.

Got a call yesterday that GM said NOT to tear the trans apart. They changed fluid, drove it some, and changed fluid again. They put in new drain/fill plugs. According to the tech it's better, but I only had problems until the transmission warmed up--then it was butter.

My dealership said they've got this down and documented, and to make sure to stop in if it gets worse again. As of yet, GM doesn't have a guaranteed "fix" like new synchros or anything. The dealer assured me that it would be covered under my 5-year/100k powertrain warranty if something were to go catastrophic, so not to worry.

tl;dr - GM is still collecting information on the issue, no guaranteed fix in place yet.

Bens1le 09-25-2014 06:47 PM

Here's my take in all this, see my posts in the 1LE section under synchro thread
Original clutch line two piece junk, routed too close to the double catted mid pipe(HEAT!!!)
Poor fluid and bleed procedure from the factory, it's really a two person operation, I know as I've done it
Combine this with a cheap plastic , non adjustable clutch master cylinder,"see ideal garage for better unit FYI". And you aren't getting the release bearing disengaging the pressure plate /travel enough
It's kind of a train wreck , and our gen cars aren't the only ones with it
I was Shocked to see 2 gens older w similar issues ,sad gm just can't get it right
The engineers did listen to me , I offered them to come drive mine as it's perfect
For example, I haven't driven my car for 2 weeks, been busy and dealing w a virus
Went out tonight , fired it up and from bone cold went right into gear no issues

david06851313 02-25-2015 12:33 PM

Mine grinds second sometimes rolling slow and also when pushing in the clutch in first or second sometimes will make a shutter sound when it releases.

That sounds more like you need to bleed your clutch and brake systems.

I was not aware it was a 2014. Your profile says a 2010 still.

I would definitely bring it to your dealer, and mention the EI document I posted at the beginning of this thread.

yep feel like you have to shift twice when slowly shifting it. Pull it in then pull it again and you get a unsatisfied feeling after unlike every other gear.

I don't even dare drive it when its cold or I have to skip 2nd as it feels way to notchy.

Software Guy 02-26-2015 12:55 PM

shifting from 1-2 sucks when it's cold, say below 30 or if the car is warmed up. It brings to mind the saying "can't find em grind em". I usually go for 3rd until it's warm. It really sucks when it's -12 out. I just assumed it was a fluid issue.

I started my own thread on here. The trans is coming out right now.

Here is what's going on. Said replacing second and third gears and syncros. They said both gears looked wore and needed replaced. Car has 21k miles.

backeddy 04-10-2015 12:41 AM

well well well, guess us track guys did not "abuse" our cars after all, huh GM?

Rizzo 04-11-2015 07:27 AM

I subscribed as well. I have the same problem and brought my car into the dealership. The dealership kept it for a few days and could not reproduce the problem. I now have to wait until it starts acting up again to bring it into the dealership in hopes of it being broken for them as well.

chris7488 04-16-2015 05:05 PM

I've taken my car to the dealer three times for the grinding from 1st to 2nd gear and they always come up with the same bullshit excuse can't duplicate I'm so pissed
