most new cars oil change is every 5k miles i hope this one is too

The computer has a program based on driving cycles, distance, etc. to tell you when to change the oil. More highway trips, and it will extend further. On my 05 cts (3.6L v6), I went over 10,000 miles between changes, based on what the computer told me. This is with mostly highway driving. These engines use synthetic also, which typically gives you some more time between changes, and the computer takes all of this into account (since they recommend synthetic from the factory).

Change the oil based on what the oil monitor dictates. The V6 should use Mobil 1 as in the CTS and based on your driving you might change it once a year. Don't change it any more than you have to. It's a waste of money.

cool thanks

i drive 25k miles a year so i think i might have to change it more then that.i hope its not a pain in the ass to change the oil in these cars

:word: OLMS (new acronym for oil life monitor system?) is prettty accurate. It takes into account how many times you start and stop the car, temperatures, average speed, etc. You can go up to 10,000 miles before changing. My wife's Malibu got it's first oil change @ 8,700 miles and it was still at 21%.

Can you really rely on the oil warning thing? I've only seen it in my truck once. And I usually change it every 8k+ miles (synthetic).

I rely on the oil warning thing in my 2002 GMC, except when I'm lazy or busy and go a lot longer than it says. I've got 183,000 miles and it's still going strong.

it better be more than 5k, hell i would venture it will routinely hit 10k without any questions.

between using synthetic and the fact that it has a lot of oil i would imagine this engine would probably have no problem in the 10k+ mile range.

As at least some comparison i drive around a V6 alero (3.4 liter) which uses regular oil only takes 5 or so quarts. i get 6-7k miles out of an oil change pretty easy. Now most of my driving is highway miles but still. the Camaro has a slightly bigger engine with a much bigger oil reservoir. the discussion for this car starts in the 7k mile range and like i said im sure goes into the 10k mile range depending on type of driving.

i change every 5,000 KM. no matter what the sensor says. i think it is best for the car, and if it helps prevent further mechanical problems, then ill do it every 5,000 KM (about 3,000 miles)

btw i only drive like 10,000 KM a year (6,200 miles), so twice a year really doesnt break the bank :D

7.6 quarts of Mobile 1 just might break the bank for some of us!:confused0068:

9 qts of RP is a lil pricey as well. oh wait, thats for my SS

iwannagofast 05-19-2009 09:29 AM

I usually change it around 4,000 to 4500 miles and go till the OLMS says 55 to 50 %. I trust it, but to me going below 55% like a failing grade.

I followed the computer on my Pontiac G6. It had 6600 miles when it called for the oil change. I changed it and sent a sample to Blackstone Labs in Indiana. They said the oil was still good and I could run it to 7500 miles! I was running Castrol Syntec.

Number 3's computer did not request an Oil Change til nearly 10,000 miles. But keep in mind, half of that was highway to California and back.

The computer calculates oil condition based on load, rpm etc. to determine when the oil needs to be changed. It is quite well thought out and tested. The oil change shops will still want you to go 3,000 miles, but your car knows better than them.

HA! You have a car so smart it wants to save you money for gas to do burnouts.

I mean it wants to save you money.
