My Maggie install.........

So tomorrow, after church, I will begin the install.

It's been killing me having this thing here and not getting on it.

Any tid bits of advice, experiences, warnings, or ideas you think might help, just post away.

I followed a regional thread already and got a few pointers and things to look out for, but too many is not enough. lol

I will update the progress as I go. May take a week or so. I'm gonna shoot some video and I can't devote all my time to it. But I don't expect it to take any longer. I will update here as I go with pics and any problems or items.

My first question after looking over the book; Is there a substitute for the "Lubriplate" lubricant?

Because my blower was previously installed on another Camaro I don't have a few things. The previous owner boxed it up and left a few out. I can improvise on most of it but this is one I'm not sure on.

On a side note, Bonnie told me to go have it installed by a pro. I told her they wanted 1400.00 and she said do it because the Emergancy Room visit last time I worked on the car was WAY more than that.

Not expecting any injuries this time.

My Maggie. :)

I don't know the guy personaly, but I know Tim. It was not Tim who sold me the unit but Tim does his engine work and Tim put me in touch with him. Tim didn't pack the unit up or anything. And still to Tims credit has taken good care of me.

Make sure you have an adequate supply of 1/4in drive metric sockets, wobblers, extensions, and universal joints to get at all of the intake bolts. And remember, INCH pounds, not foot pounds. You can get "Lubriplate" at any parts store, but I think any white lithium grease will work. :chevy:

In what context? Maggie end housing lube? assembly lube? gasket lube ? Lubriplate is usually a synthetic based lube by Mobil. They also do food grade stuff if you plan on gnawing on your maggie or Bonnie . You may want to ask Brian, Jessika or Simon at MagnaCharger.

Because my blower was previously installed on another Camaro I don't have a few things. I can improvise on most of it but this is one I'm not sure on.

You may also want to be in contact with the person whose car it was previously on...

On a side note, Bonnie told me to go have it installed by a pro. I told her they wanted 1400.00 and she said do it because the Emergancy Room visit last time I worked on the car was WAY more than that.

Not expecting any injuries this time.

My Maggie. :)

Subscribed and rooting you on. Looks like the pictures were taken in your bedroom, your not sleeping with that thing, are you? Ask Jessika if she can send you a tube of the lubricant, bet she will or offer an alternative.

Tips from someone who did their own install:
Take your time: you wouldn't want to break something or lose a neccessary part in the bowels between the frame and engine.

Install the water hoses for the intercooler system on the back of the supercharger before putting the supercharger in place. I found this out the hard way and, it took longer than it should have being; it was the hardest thing to do working in the space provided.

Don't forget the small brass intercooler plug. Mine was not in the intercooler when I installed it. Took me a while to figure out where the leak was coming from.

Relax, the more you rush to get this done; the more problems you will have later on.

Install the tune before disconnecting the battery. You will be working with fuel lines and I suggest you do disconnect the battery. All it takes is one spark to have a flare up. Nothing may seem wrong on the outside but the fumes you were inhaling just seared your lungs. Not good!

Another hard thing to do is locking the bolts down between the supercharger driveshaft and the engine. I used an adjustable T bar with a socket end. Having these bolts torqued to spec is not exactly done to a science however, if they are as tight as you can get them without snapping them; you shouldn't have any problems.

If you have the GM ground effects kit; there should be two holes available to route the hoses through. Although hard to find at first; they are there.

If your only going to run the stock 6 lbs: If you have tried everything and still can not get that crank bolt out. You can run the system without pinning the crank until you can get to a shop that has the tools to do so. I wouldn't reccomend running your system permanety this way as without a pinned crank you run the risk of spinning the crank pulley on it's shaft causing a lot more problems and headaches than you need.

Remember, your going to be pushing a lot more power and you will be tempted to get on it a lot more. The amount of time to stop will increase and the from end of your vehicle will feel a tad heavier. Until you get used to the difference I'd suggest taking things easy.

During initial startup: look for leaks and listen for anything unusual. If all is well, take a ride driving normally then look over everything again; as things that are going to happen will present themselves during the initial ride. If you feel comfortable; open her up and enjoy!:D

n2oSS 01-02-2011 08:20 AM

one good tip is put the hoses on the rear of the supercharger before you install it. I would also suggesst getting some stiffer hoses becuase the maggie ones bend and crease easily. Remember to burp the engine and watch temp guage after install to.

Way to go PQ!!! You are getting BLOWN!!!! LOL .... Get er done!!! :happyanim:

GJG 01-02-2011 11:47 AM

my tip.....decide now what type engine covers you are going with......that decision may help you decide whether to move the reservoir to the driver side.......wish i had moved mine during the install.....now i'll have to drain the inter-cooler to move it.....would have taken 30 minutes during install to mount the bracket near the break reservoir.....:mad0259:

That's exactly what happened to me. I had Roto-fab engine covers and had to move the reservoir. Fortunately, I had the shop do the install and they moved the reservoir to the driver's side. But, if we'd known this ahead of time, it would have saved some hassles.

Silver2SSRS6spd 01-02-2011 12:41 PM

You mentioned above that you purchased your Maggie used, did you also get all of the addendums to the installation instructions? There were a few pages of them, I can scan and email them to you if you didn't get them.

Excellent tip! I'm thinking of cutting up my stock cover, I know they sell a bracket kit for it so it should work.

Uh. I wasn't even thinking about that. I'm not a real cosmetic engine bay guy. Would you suggest it? And if so, link me to some pics?

Yup. Tim sent it all to me.

Good thing is that, coming off of a car already, that it is semi assembled in ways. Like the hoses on the blower it's self.

Good tips and ideas here. I have read and taken in the tips thus far. Church went a little long this morning but I'm headed out now.

Oh, and that's my office at work. :sm0: But I may have started sleeping with it had it been much longer. lol

Bruce, you really think I should contact the previous car owner? And why? Should I be concerned?

Actually no. I don't see any instruction ammendments but just an itemized parts list.

I gotta head to Lowes real quick. I'll take you up on that offer.

I have a small leak in my intercooler that I was going to track down today, I think you may have saved me some time since I didn't install the brass plug. Now the big question, which side of the intercooler does this go on and is it easy to get to with the system installed. Another question, did you mean heat exchanger or the actual intercooler under the supercharger?

Trying to scan all of the documents into a manageable size, the first attempt was over 45mb. Give me a few minutes.

Two emails sent to you. I included the parts list I have just in case it changed. Please confirm that you got them.

heat exchanger (radiator).....i can't remember exactly where it is located once installed.....:iono: the instructions should help you locate it and decide how hard it is to get to.....there was another DIY? around that had the same problem......sorry i forgot to mention it......i

Brass plug is on top of intercooler, right side. Easy to get to, especially if you remove the two top radiator bolts and lean the entire assembly aft. :chevy:

Good Luck, Randy!!!

Can't wait to see how it goes!

My only advise is don't be surprised, or disappointed if you don't finish it today. Take your time, and you'll have a monster in the garage by the end of the day tomorrow!! :D

Thanks, that was my problem. Randy probably doesn't have to worry about this unless the previous installer didn't install it either. Better check your's Randy, it's on the top front left side of the heat exchanger.

Silver2SSRS6spd 01-02-2011 03:09 PM

Thanks to Kwaz1335, I think I found my small leak that could have turned into a disaster if the plastic cap would have popped off in flight. I guess it's smart to advise against cracking a mini-keg open during installation, that's when we installed the heat exchanger and we probably were close to the end of the keg.

Off for another test drive with laptop in tote.

Kwaz1335 01-02-2011 03:19 PM

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. I did mean the heat exchanger; already answered. No problem and, I hope all works out for you. PQ...I noticed the pulley on the supercharger driveshaft is missing in your pics...was it included?

Kwaz1335 01-02-2011 03:33 PM

Another thing I was thinking about...I would reccomend a quality catch can. If you already have one; I have intructions on how to hook it up to your Maggie with pictures I took. With a blower you are more prone to have oil blow by in the PCV valve system. Good luck

PQ 01-02-2011 03:54 PM

Ok. Update. Finally got the engine cover off. Whew............ this is tough.

:bellyroll:

I been screwing off and preparing my garage plus had to go get all my stuff. Wasn't easy finding an inch pound wrench.
But I'm on it now. Got a pc here in the garage. I was gonna set up a web cam but I don't have one. lol
