Steering Wheel Jerking
Hey guys and gals,
So i've been noticing something different the last 2 weeks. It seems like whenever i hit any sort of bump, my wheels want to shoot off in that direction. What i mean is that when im hitting a bump or part of the road that is uneven, it seems like the car tries to veer off to the side. At first i thought maybe there was something wrong with my alignment... but it happens on BOTH sides. sometimes the steering wheel moves by itself way to the left, sometimes to the right... Any ideas whats going on? Or am i just crazy and this is bound to happen because of the fact that the wheel on the ground are turning to either side when they hit an uneven surface? |
Take it to the dealer, should be under warranty.

How low are your front tires (tread wise) mine are getting bad and do this now from the tires being bad

Mine does this all the time, I think it's normal for these cars.

Check your tire pressure.

It,s from the staggered wheel setup of the RS... Normal!!!

There is a thread about this on here somewhere but the short answer given by SlingShot is correct. The wide tread and staggered setup of the 20 inch wheels is the cause. My SS does this as well.

I too had this happen and pulled over for a front suspension and lug nut
inspection. The stretch of road I was on was bumpy and uneven. Don't drive with your wrist on bumpy back roads! |
If tire pressure is good and tire wear is even, I think you are OK. My SS does this too when going over a speed bump at an angle. The grooves/crown in the road will affect the wheel too if they are deep enough.

The culprit is the summer tires.... I just switched to my summers this weekend and they grip the road to the point that they follow groves and cracks and feel like they are jumping around more. I'd have thought something was wrong with my steering, but the softer winter tires don't seem to do the same thing, and I have 245's up front and 275 in back just like the stock width. My friend's 04 mustang cobra also did this with his wide summer tires.
