Vibration in Steering Wheel after New Wheels/Tires

I just upgraded my wheels and tires with the TSW Nurburgring.

The wheels and tires were BRAND NEW.

I went with 20x10 35 offset in the rear and 20x9 35 offset in the front.
I went with the Nitto Invo's 3/15/35/20 in the rears and 275/40/20 in the fronts. They have balanced the wheels twice now and verified that the hub centric rings were placed in there. They also state that the wheels and tires are not out of round. Above 60+ MPH the steering wheel starts to shake anywhere from slightly to very noticeable with no set pattern to figure out whats causing it. Before I spend my next day off AGAIN going back to them.. or potentially to get a 2nd opinion... does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this?

The suspension is bone stock.

Swap out one wheel at a time with your stock wheel (if you still have them) to isolate exactly what is causing it.

Sorry got my ignorance.. but are there different sized hub centric rings?

There is, but as long as you got all the same wheels you should be using all the same rings. You could make sure they sent you the right size rings though. They should fit on the hub and in the wheel without any major slack.

Any idea what the size ring i would need is? I believe I just looked it up and the bore of the wheels i have are 76mm and stock is 67. I dont remember what the bore size is on the ss 66.9 or 67.1 I believe?

We have 66.9, but 67.1 will work just fine and is what I have on my Forgestar F14s. That's only a .007" (abouyt the thickness of a human hair).

When I bring it back to Discount Tire I will ask them to tell me what size ring I have. Any other thoughts as to why the vibration?

It is your balance. I had the exact same problem, they had to balance my wheels 4 times before it was fixed. Every shop has a balancer, but how often is it calibrated? If there machine is not calibrated it will never be balanced. It finally took them 2 hours to balance one of my rear tires to finally get it right. They put on 3 strips of weights.

If they can't get it done right, take it to another tire shop and pay them to do it right.

I had the same problem after my new wheels, it took me awhile to find the right hub centric rings, but after I did the problem was gone..........

balance

are you having the tires road force balanced? if not i would suggest it.

Nine Ball 04-13-2012 09:08 AM

Steering wheel shaking/vibrating at a specific mph range = front wheel(s) are out of balance.

Also, that rear 315 tire isn't a proper fit for a 10.0 wide wheel, with that low of an offset. Probably sticks out of the fender?

Actually it does not buldge out past the fenders at all. The reason i went with the invo's is apparently they run a tad bit smaller than most other 315's but not too wide for the 10" wheel. I will be taking some pictures this weekend since I havent had the daylight to do so during the week, but they sit RIGHT at the edge of the fender.

Alright.. I'm gonna take it back to them to balance it one more time and if that still wont fix it I will try somewhere else... the dealer is the only one I know that does road force balancing.. and they charge like $120 or so to do it.... are they the only ones who do it?

when i put on new wheels, i left the mounter who just balanced them, and i took it on the highway- @ 75mph i got the vibs.- went directly to a different shop to have them rebalanced and the wheels were first tested as they were(w/o removing the weights that were first put on) and all 4 wheels needed re-balancing-or should i say, the two machines read the same wheels differently. i still get the vibs but the second shop did a better job(less vibs) , or should i say the second machine was more accurate- they looked like the same brand of machines- i also insist on standing next to them when they balance- if they will not accommodate me, then i thank them and find a different shop who will.my next step is 'road force' as i do not want an iota of vibrations, and i hope that makes them true
