Zl1 vs pro-touring 69 camaro...

Quote:

On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, David Freiburger meets up with Pro Touring legend Mark Stielow to compare old and new Camaros head to head. Mark Stielow is a GM engineer with a long history of building vintage, street-worthy Camaros with amazing handling prowess. His latest is the Red Devil, a '69 model powered by a 427ci, supercharged LS9 that tops 750 hp and 800 lb-ft. It runs a six-speed trans and complete suspension from Detroit Speed, and has won a number of shootouts with similarly built Pro Touring cars. But can his modified muscle car outrun the technology of the Magnetic Ride suspension on the new, 580hp, 2012 Camaro ZL1? We head to GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan to find out.

I thought this was pretty cool...

KKreme15 07-27-2012 04:45 PM

You beat me by 3 minutes!
1:42.0x at gingerman!

srt0739 07-27-2012 04:51 PM

Exhaust and engine sound on both are great and love the flames exit the 69's exhaust at time 5:30 something on the vid.

drummer5679 07-27-2012 04:51 PM

as he said, would like to see this done with the corvette.

Blueclyde 07-27-2012 05:15 PM

I'm thinking the ZL1 should have about 60 more hp.

hognutz 07-27-2012 05:28 PM

Love the pro touring camaro's but has someone that has priced building one you could not even think about it for the price of a ZL1.

427ci LS9 motor ???? ~20k+
Detroit speed front subfram 7.5k
quadralink rear 2.5k
tremec swap kit ~5k
forged wheels ~4k

needless to say lots of coin.

it is amazing how fast his car is though. when they did the optimum battery shootout he lapped a bit faster than the Z06 the optima batties brought.

I think the Z07 and Zr1 would give him a run but they both would till be down on power that car is hauling the mail.

could not agree more. The nice thing about that is pulley, tune, cai will pretty much get you there. then just need to upgrade the cooling.

Blueclyde 07-27-2012 05:35 PM

Do not want to lose my warranty. Kind of feel like GM should offer a kit for sale through dealers that gets 60hp without losing warranty. I'm willing to buy it and after spending 60k on the car kind of feel like they owe it to the folks that bought one. Then this totally badass car won't get smoked on the dragstrip or straightaways.

^^^ What he said. I want my warranty...for now

Come on GM, need a bump.

69NMYSS 07-27-2012 05:41 PM

Wow, that '69 just might be able to hang with mine :sm0:

Russell James 07-27-2012 05:43 PM

That '69 should be the blueprint for the next Gen ZL1 or Z28. Smaller, lighter, more powerfull, more retro. Turn that '69 into a modern production car and the waiting list would start today.

I agree 100%... I would do whatever it took to get one.

Put me first on the list!:chevy:

AquaSSRS 07-27-2012 08:57 PM

Nice video. Really love the sound of the red devil.

PYROLYSIS 07-27-2012 09:11 PM

Wow. 2 fine examples of what a great Camaro should be. I don't know the man but im glad Mark Stielow is on our side. :)

Ya but is that bad ass 69' current emissions legal? Or only because it's exempt?:iono:

classicam 07-27-2012 10:04 PM

The ZL1 should be about a 1,000 lbs heavier, modern suspension is hard too beat.

Loved the video...

sammyv 07-28-2012 06:51 AM

That was awesome! Didn't see anywhere the weight and hp of the 69?

RLHMARINES 07-28-2012 08:11 AM

Thanks, that was a great watch, really enjoyed the commentary and of course the on track action. Chevy Runs Deep, especially in corners.

LINMUP 07-28-2012 08:41 AM

Awsome video and you couldn't find a better car to compare to. I've been following Mark Stielows builds since his first car in 92 which won the Car Craft Real Street Shootout. The man is the god father of Pro Touring and builds the most amazing 69's in the world....and he can drive to boot.

brucedd 07-28-2012 04:45 PM

No mention of just how much is invested in the Red Devil. Any clue?

Mark does a lot of the work himself but there's probably at least 100k in the car. It even has ABS brakes. If you had that car built by DSE, it would probably run about $250K to replicate.

I was just going to post this also.
Car and Driver lists
Est. price $250,000
Engine: 427 w/ZR1 supercharger and more aftermarket performance parts
HP: 756
TQ: 804
Curb weight 3617
0-60 4.1
1/4 mile 11.8 @ 127 mph

Very awesome car. Could you imagine what he could do with the ZL1 and a 100k.

:word:I immediately noticed the flames too... pretty cool .

The answer to this puzzle is simple though (and is the same answer to the GT500 problem) just change the pulley and add a CAI and tune and the ZL1 will dominate every track...it simply loses on straight line acceleration to lighter more powerful pony cars!

At what point does an old car become vintage sheetmetal on a new car?

I know about VINs etc, I was in the restoration hobby for 20 years.

I like the Red Devil a lot. I'd own it. But to me, this is a new car with 1969 sheetmetal on it. That's not a bad thing, it's just a thing

I'm not surprised the modded car won; the factory car wasn't built to push the envelope. It's built to be a great package that passes required testing for government ratings and to fulfill a business model.

I love Red Devil! The ZL1 is awesome but I'd take Red Devil all day long!

Red Devil:headbang:

WhiteBanshee 07-29-2012 08:04 PM

I'm with u ctK1, I would take the Red Devil over the ZL1.

Blk-Ice 07-30-2012 03:05 AM

AAAAWWWWWWSOOOOOOOOME!!!:headbang:

DangerZL1 07-30-2012 05:46 AM

The RedDevil is probably the best sounding Camaro I've ever heard and certainly the best done. I wouldn't expect less from a GM engineer and the application of modern technology to a 43 year old car. The performance difference between these two cars isnt as great given the 600 lb weight and 240 lb torque advantage of the 69. Kind of like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

MichaelH 07-30-2012 09:35 AM

god both those cars sound sick and i really love that stock exhaust note from the ZL1
