The muscle car killer

I was watching on the news today 1/3/2008 CNBC. There's suppose to be a huge spike in gas prices due to high demand for crude oil as the year 2008 progresses.:mad0233: For people who have knowledge in the past high gas prices is what killed the muscle car era. Gas prices are suppose to go up to a whomping $4.00/per gallon.:mad0260: What do you guys think? do you think this will kill Dodge's challenger and fords mustang? Chevy already said they will have the cylinder shut down technology giving the Camaro a projected 30mpg/highway and 22mpg/city. But the challenger and the mustang only can get 23mpg/highway at max as of so far. You guys and so maybe girls thoughts?

I think we'll be fine. There's a lot of crap I could spout about why - but it wasn't gas prices alone that killed the Musclecars back then.

To quote another author on this point sums up my view on the topic:

"Summary, Muscle cars in the traditional sense was dead BEFORE emissions and fuel economy killed them. The public moved away from them, insurance made them too expensive, baby boomers matrured to personal luxury cars as they grew older, meanwhile, banning lead in gasoline directly killed high compression engines.... till modern electronics and on board computers made up for it years later."

Historical sales numbers, (i.e. 200,000+ Camaros sold per year during certain years in the 70's) just don't support a "Camaro's going to die!!!" theory...:iono:

$4/gal is about what we pay now. I see plenty of mustangs, chargers, camaros, and corvettes driving around. Its ok, you will survive.

And in back in the day it was gas prices+emissions+insurance that killed the muscle car

$3.10 for 87 in Jacksonville Fl

Cubanaso 01-04-2008 10:50 AM

Hey, maybe someone else has asked but will the new Camaro take regular (87)? My RX8 can use it but it asks for 91 (which is hard to find) so I'm filling her up with 93 all the time. I hope...87 is in the picture for the Camaro.

Anyway, GM's V8's are great with fuel economy considering their size/power/etc but I bet we will see less gas V8's, more diesel V8's, hybrids, etc.

Remember also, recently they have figured out how to get ALOT more power out of lithium batteries (10-20X the power storage for laptops as an example) so every other technology out there (because of high gas) will grow further which isn't a bad thing environmentally speaking. Nano technology is the wave of the future MAN...LOL.

Even gas V8's will live on while we probably will see less of them.

you shouldnt worry, with everyone converting vegetables into fuels i think it'll even out the prices of gas, atleast i hope, and with gm's fuel flex technology which i hope it gets it shouldnt be too hard to fill her up, though here in chicago/indiana prices are getting pretty steep...but i'm not complaining i drive a v6 :)

Jeff 01-08-2008 06:46 PM

$3.05 ish for 89 Octane here in San Antonio :\

Navy Blue 01-08-2008 07:19 PM

being honest i just hope its not like a suburban,we had one for a while like for trips or going out with the family and nice as it was, it consumed quite alot of gas, i have thought about getting a v6 camaro..but naa v8 all the way!
