So the LS9 does exist...but wait!
While I was doing some light end-of-semester homework...it occured to me:
*cloudy dream like state* "The recent introduction of the ’08 Corvette’s 430-hp LS3 V-8, along with the release later this year of the ’08 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid’s 6.0L V-8, represent the last editions of the Gen IV engine family, Stephens says." *clouds evaporate* I mean, to be fair...we really don't know that much about the LS9. So I suppose it could be a next-gen engine. Both of the above engines have been released, now. So this whole situation begs the question: IS the LS9 a Generation V engine? (Meaning DI) Or was this Tom Stephens guy just 'talking'... Thoughts? |

Ya know Dragon, you make a good (albeit cloudy) point. I have been STARING at the LS9 (the link that YOU posted, thank you very much) for a while now and man, it's just a piece of art! In the top view of the intercooler, I can make out what appears to be the plenum "runners" that feed the heads, and with all the fittings and sensors shown in the pics, I would expect to see some injectors in or around those runners IF it were Port Injected. DI is a whole different story.

The LS9 as I understand it is an LS3+supercharger+intercooler, and a couple other little things. But basically its an LS3. I don't see it contradicting the statement about the end of the gen IV small blocks.

just cus they are the last of the gen IV engines doesnt mean they cant be expounded upon. ie: LS9 = S/C LS3...lol

Good points. That whole idea of it really just being an LS3 completely slipped my mind...

Actually its LS3->LS8->LS9
The LS8 is a detuned LS9. I have seen articles both saying it is also intercooled and it isn't so I don't know but it is supposed to be in the 550 HP area. I don't think an LS9 will ever be in a Camaro but I could see an LS8 in one as some kind of special edition, 100th anniversary of Chevy (2011), etc. |

I'm just curious...how do you know that the LS8 isn't intercooled. Not being agressive or anything - just, like I said, curious.

Well like I said I have seen it listed both ways for the intercooler so I don't know who is right. I would think at that power level it would have to be intercooled. The LS8 and LS9 are basically both supercharged 6.2s with different power levels. I just get the feeling that the LS9 is going to be a ZR1 only engine like the LS7 was a Z06 only engine. The LS8 is the one I would expect to see in other models.

Not understanding that pic. Are you saying you think the LS8 will be lower in power than the LS3?
Oh I get it, you are saying that both are derived from the LS3. I would agree with that, they are both basically SC LS3s. Whether they created the LS9 first and made a lower powered LS8 for other models or the LS8 came first (after the LS3) I have no idea. |
