DIY - Bowtie Plastidip - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

I wanted to blacken my bowtie and see how it looks. Did not want to paint it, as I wanted to be able to come back if I didn't like it and didn't want to order things online or use vinyl which can peal off fairly easy. So I Used Plastidip.

For those who do not know what this is, it's as easy to apply as your can paint, has a great Matt finish to it, if you do not want it in future, you simply peel it off!

Parts/Tools Needed:
Plastidip Can ($15...only need 1/10th of can)
Painters Tape ($1)
Newspaper or garbage bag ($0)
Blade/Knife

STEP 1:
Cover everything except the emblem. Use the painters tape and your newspaper/garbage bag. You do not need to cover the entire car, however, take precautions similar to you would with a paint.

STEP 2:
Paint. I did 4 coats, each coat with an interval of 5 minutes (the can said 30 minutes, but 5 worked just fine with me, I don't have that much patience). End result was perfect.

STEP 3:
Peel off the plastidip from the area you do not wish to have it on. In my case, I wanted to keep the chrome portion. I used a knife/blade, to make a cut around the border of the bowtie and simply peeled the rest off.

STEP 4:
Admire your final product. Repeat the same process for back Bowtie as well.

I used the search button to see if there was a DIY for this. I saw one for PlastiDip removal, so figured I would write this up quickly for the ones that are considering doing this little quick sweet mod. I am not sure if I am going to keep this look in the long run, but for now, I definetely like the refreshing look.

Wait, you didn't want to use vinyl because it can peal off so you used plastidip which can peal off.

I have got a lot of messages about how to take off the Bowtie from the grill prior to applying Plastidip.

Please note that I never took it off, as i simply just taped and covered surrounding areas and painted the Bowtie directly.

You take the bowtie of the grill by puliing the horizonatl tabs downward. At the same time you pull the badge forward, while twisting counter clockwise, or maybe clockwise (can't remember). It pops off, but your fingers will be numb for a few minutes! If you feel around behind the bowtie you'll find em.

I've had my bowties plastidipped for a year now and I park my car outside in blazing sun and pouring rain everyday with salty wet sea air and reclaimated sprinkler water blasting it and I wash my car AT LEAST twice a week and they still look fine. Just lay it on nice and thick and don't use any harsh chemicals on it and it will hold up a long time. Worst case scenario is it lasts a year then you have to respray it..no big deal.

Well, after reading tons of threads and watching videos on Plastidip, I jumped on the bandwagon. Here are my first attempts. Plan on doing the wheels this weekend!

I have to say, the first time you pull the trigger with the can pointed at you car is a little nerve racking. Now though, I want to dip everything! Its addictive

I did that to my car the first week I had it. I also plastidipped the emblems on the side. I have pics up just dont know how to post them here if anyones interested to see how it looks. Also you can get plastidip at home depot for 5.99 a can. I am planning on plastidipping my whole care once i get the money saved up. Have fun but be careful its extremely addictive. I have plastidipped almost all of my friends emblems/logos on there car.

Did you take your lettering off the car if not how did you do it without getting the over spray on the car?

I think most of us are leaving any of the emblems on the car, except the front, it's easy to pop off. Spending a decent amount of time taping everything up will help to make sure you don't get overspray on the car. Then use newspaper to cover a good 4x4 area around the spray zone. Just be care ful and don't use long sweeps to keep the overspray down. Good Luck!

Using PlastiDip, you actually intentionally overspray about an inch around the lettering and tape off outside of that area. Once dry, you simply peel away the overspray and it etches itself around the letting leaving only the letters coated. Amazing stuff!!

I've had my SS for 5 days and have been looking for things to do to it and this is going to be my first. I was able to remove the bowtie fairly easy after looking through other forum topics and plan on spraying it with PlastiDip tomorrow evening. After I finish the front and am happy with it, I'm planning on doing the back one too.

I actually went to Home Depot and bought a can of plastidip for only $5.48 a can... Haha. Wherever you bought it for $15 for, they ripped you off.
