Looking for insight on interior space - potential owner
Good evening folks, I'm Aaron and looking into moving on from my 2015 Mustang GT Performance Package soon. The list is short and consists of the Camaro Z/28, Mustang GT350, and an F8X M3/4.
The main issue I run into with cars is interior size. I'm 6'6". I've read as many threads as I could find regarding height, but very few seem to mention "with a helmet" in them. I'm a track guy, and autocrosser, home track is Mid Ohio and it'll see 4-8 HPDE days a year and about the same autocrosses. I fit VERY well in the S550 chassis mustangs, and the GT350 is the natural progression. The trouble is that damn 7 liter is trying it's best to pull me over I have to admit, after test driving both a modded Z/28 and a stock 2017 GT350 at Toy Barn here in town, I'm having some mixed emotions. I would have put money the GT350 would have wiped the floor with the Camaro, but here I am. The main item I want to try to find an answer on is feasibility of getting myself in there with a helmet on. If I can't, well it'll just be another car in the majority. I'm 100% ok with requiring a new seat, and mounts, etc. It's going in any car I get along with a 4pt cage, etc. What say you Camaro 5? I appreciate it! |

My buddy was in my car riding passenger in the front seat and he is 6’4”. He owns a Gt350 currently, he says that my car has more leg room than his, and pretty much equivalent headroom, maybe a hair less. He even crawled into the backseat to test fit, and he had to put his head toward the middle of the car to fit lol.

I went from a '14 SS 1LE to a '15 Z/28. Even though they are the same chassis, you'll have less headroom in the Z/28 due to the Recaro's. They seem to sit a little higher. I'm 6'2" and I have to recline the seat a bit to fit. I'm doing an autocross this weekend, weather permitting, so I'll let you know how that goes.

Good review of a '15 z/28 and mentions head room issues, he's like 6'2" IIRC

If you can get into one with a helmet would be worth a test. I'm 5'10 on a good day and with a helmet need to recline my seat. I did have a 6'4 guy right seat and he was ok. It all depends on if you can seat yourself and recline the seat enough and yet be comfortable for how you drive.

I'm 6'3 225... I do track days in my Modded Z28... I have no problem fitting in to the car with the factory seat... I probably have 1"-1.5" to spare. You will probably have to get a different seat and bracket for mounting.

If you have a car local to you why don't you grab your helmet and go see?

One thing no one has mentioned yet is the fact that some tall folks have longer legs and a shorter torso and others vice versa. Makes a difference when saying I'm 6'6", will I fit?

Great point. I am 6'4", all legs. I have no problem with the seat slightly laid back with my helmet on.
