Almost the same happened to me. Was going through the gears as a passed a cop that was pulled off hiding in a neighborhood entrance. Pulled me over and asked for the info. As i'm searching for the docs he's walking around checking it out. Went to car and came back and just gave a warning and said nice car.. have a good evening.

Do you tell your friends that? Or do you tell them something more like "yeah, I got caught doing 95 in a 65 zone"!

I doubt most police officers would think "lets give this guy with a flashy new high performance car a break." If you are driving a new Camaro, "Life" has already given you a break. I would be more likely to give a "break" to someone who looks like he can't afford a ticket, someone driving a rattier car or truck who is on their way to work or has a load of kids.

I'm glad you're retired. It's a police officers job to enforce the law equally, not determine who in life deserves a break.

He could have wanted to run the plates to see if the vehicle was reported stolen. I've had a few officers tail me for a bit. They see a young guy driving a new Camaro. It must be stolen.

More likely scenarios:

You said the officer was "watching traffic", he proably wasn't running radar. When your car went by, it was similar to a suspect vehicle the police were looking for. He caught up to you, ran your temp. tag, and discovered that you were not the wanted vehicle.

In Michigan, a temp. tag is just a piece of paper. He may have seen you go by and [at night] thought your car did not have a plate and/or was stolen. Again, once he caught up and saw your temp. tag, he backed off.

Another possibility, he did want to write you a speeding ticket, but got called off for a more important run.

Whatever the reason, congratulaions on your good fortune.
Thats the difference between us. I WOULD give the ticket toyhe person with a load of kids. Thy SHOULD be driving smarter while in the car.

I knew a few officers who think like you do. They are incapable of exercising "discression" and soon earn a reputation as someone who would write their own mother a ticket. If you are determined to "enforce the law equally" then EVERYONE you stop gets a ticket, or NO One you stop gets a ticket.

I share your happiness in my retirement.
