L99 A6 interlock issue?
When I went to take the car out of park and put it in gear tonight, there was a very audible clicking sound coming from inside the center console-shift area of the car when I depressed the brake.:( I am not very mechanical, but I am guessing it is some sort of interlock/module/mechanism that is not working exactly right. Not psyched about that, third issue with the Camaro since I bought it in July. Just little problems...but it takes time away from enjoying the car nonetheless.

Yes, there is a solenoid the releases a lock when you press the brake. Some are noisy and some are quiet. I can just barely hear mine. I would test it about 10 times and see of the noise is getting worse. If not I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the reply. It used to be quiet, and now it is quite pronounced. If GM says its normal and doesn't think it is anything, I will live with it. I have never had a car that has ever done that before. If all else fails, I will just turn the radio up when I start the car.

The dealer confirmed that they did find a "problem" and that a new gear shift assembly is on order and the car should be ready to go tomorrow. I don't specifically know what part in the assembly failed, I assume one of the solenoids or related parts, but the entire assembly gets replaced. Just weird, you don't come across that part failure very often, especially in a 4 month old car.

The only component in the shifter assembly itself is a switch, that is activated when you engage the release mechanism there is nothing in the unit itself that can make an audible sound.

I will follow up once I get the car back with the invoice, the service manager on the phone stated the "shifter assembly" is being replaced. Every time I pressed the brake to take it out of park, it sounded almost like a "when you click a pen" but slightly louder. The dealer twice questioned me like I was stupid and doubted my claims. After they actually sat in the car, they acknowledged it wasn't a normal sound. They compared it to a brand new model on the lot to see the difference and it was to qoute "obviously not right". I just want it fixed, and I am not that concerned about it, this doesn't seem like something that I will likely/hopefully ever come across again for a long time.

I am familiar with the sound you are reffering to. I am also quite familiar with the shifter unit I have one on my bench I use for testing the shifters I produce. Tommorow morning when I get to my shop I will post a photo for those who are interested in what it looks like. This will also be helpful in the case the interlock switch doen't work(it's been known to happen) I will point out in the photo how to manually release it.

I would appreciate that. It would be nice to see the part that let me down. You obviously understand what you are talking about. Unfortunately, probably more than the service manager at the dealer. This is why I like the C5 forum, the info never stops.

Here are photo's of the shifter assembly, the first pictures the screw and cover to the solenoid and switch, the second the unit without cover, the third the mechanism, the fourth the mechanism with solenoid activated, the last the lever on the solenoid you would manually depress to bypass the system. I m not seeing this solenoid as making the clicking noise you are refering to, If you put your ear next to your steering column I believe you will hear the clicking there and it is quite noticeable but normal.

Thanks for the pics, as it turns out, the part had not arrived by Fri afternoon, so I took my car back and told them to call me when they get it. The dealer seemed unsure how long it will take. If they don't get the part early this week, the repair will have to wait till next spring. I will be putting her away this coming weekend.
