I saw the link below a few years back when researching the subject on cooler thermostats. It was common for people with L67's (supercharged V6) to drop from a 195 to a 180, drilled 180 or even a 160 tstat. This was done initially as a bandaid to squelch knock before tuning was available.

I go with ted. I have a 610wHP daily driver. I have already put on 25K miles on the car. Mostly all hard miles. I floor the car constantly. The car run flawless.
Question is 160 gets you more HP why not 140.. why not 120..

I am still Not Saying I am Right, but I will go out on a limb here and say that I don't think Anyone Has More experience with the 2010/11 Camaro Than I do.
Again I could be wrong here. I have tuned 244, 2010/11 Camaros to Date, combined HPtuners, SCT, Diablo. I have Logged Thousands of dyno Runs Just on 2010/11 Camaros. My Experience still Tells me For the Majority of all Street driven 2010 Camaros there is No Advantage to a 160 Stat. In a Drag Race ONLY Car There may be a Small benefit. Ted.

Guys who do not log regularly do not even know when they are experiencing detonation, KR. Moderate KR cannot be heard or felt. Furtherfmore the butt dyno would not distinguish a one or two or three degree KR when the ECM pulls the timing, especially on the street. In the summer I have even logged brief .5 KR in CRUISE. In conclusion one additional benefit for the L99 guys is much cooler transmission fluid temps. This is another technical fact....high automatic transmission fluid temperatures wreak havoc on the fluid and internals. This morning I did some running around putting on about 50 miles. The highest tranny fluid temp I reached was two needle widths below the 180* guage line. I invite any automatic transmission professional to comment on being able to run 20* - 30* cooler automatic transmission temps. When I was running my stock thermostat I almost always over the 180* mark. If these two technical points don't sway you...... then we'll just have to agree to disagree

160 Stats in a street driven 2010 Camaro are fine. I have driven many street miles, logged may passes and been on the dyno more times with more LS Engines than I can count.
When the weather gets cold of course get the stock stat back in the car. I have never had the temps run lower than 178 with a 160 stat in my personal car. They will vary dependng on the combination. Ring gaps are tight from the factory on the LS3. About .011 to .012 from what I have measured. The aluminum blocks expands like crazy the higher the temp goes. Every test on the engine dyno that I have done on LS crate engines the leakages have been less at the lower temps. As we turn the stat on the dyno down the measured blowby (crankase pressure) has dropped and the power has increased. Maybe I missed something...... Robin
