Cars sold in Australia are twisted in the opposite direction.

Actually the twist allows the dipstick to flex in any direction. Think about it. Take a thin flat piece of metal and try to flex it in the direction facing the flat, broad surface. Bends just fine. Now try to flex it in the direction facing the narrow edges. Yes you can bend it some, but it doesn't want to bend. Given the tight contraints in engine bays engineers will often "snake" the dipstick tube down along the engine block. This sometimes requires flexing in multiple directions. A flat straigh dipstick would not accomodate this.

Oh and I'd love to join the discussion about regidity, easier to reinsert etc etc.... .but I think that's been covered

Whatever the reason, it's the worst dipstick in any vehicle i've ever checked.
