Can I use a ryobi to detail?

I've got an old 4-1/2 inch grinder/polisher made by Ryobi sitting around that I use when I carve stones. I was curious if I could buy the backing plate and pads from Adam's and get the same results as a porter cable?

The chance of ruining your paint is very high with the Ryobi Grinder why even try to save $150 when you will end up ruining a panel and needing a paint job for much more than $150? Seems pretty counterproductive and a stupid idea, but your money and your car.

Not likely going to make a good polisher... do you have a model number so I can look up specs and give you a complete answer?

Ohh come on Dylan, I know your trying to be helpful but Really, Really, Really now this shouldn't even be considered.

Just to squash this as a bad idea most all Angle Grinders/Polishers have a max RPM of 11,000. There are a few that will go from 1800 to 6000 however then you have torque issues. Don't forget you have to remove the metal guard, then find a arbor and pad that will fit it properly.

This is on par with that commercial a few years back with a guy trying to polish his car with a weedwacker.

Just do not do it.

Not saying its a good idea, but rather than just blanket "NO" I like to see what they're working with and explain WHY.

Theres been times too where people have asked about a tool, mislabled what it was, and by seeing what the actual tool was I was able to help. Perfect example being another forum a guy kept referring to his Makita as a "grinder"... found out he actually had a BO6040 dual mode RO which actually does make a decent polishing tool.

Always want to clarify... at least as long as they're not using a weed whacker

Thats cool Dylan, when I saw Ryobi I knew there was no way this was a good idea. I commend you trying to get all the facts though.

No now wait a minute. I have used this method before and it does work. I have a Ryobi Grinder and we polished my buddies Camaro and now we just have to do the final buffing.

I plan to surprise my brother with a detail job soon for all the help he has done for me .

Heres the results, what do you think?
