If you care about your car's finish, maybe a reason to avoid Car Washes

Stopped at a Convenience Store today that has a drive through and hand car wash attached. Check out the "Clean Towel" Bin. Might as well dry with a Brillo Pad.

What about the "soft-cloth" car washes?

We have two in town and both air dry the car.

Wouldn't go near a car wash, especially, with a black car

I went through a couple of car washes and they scratched the hell out of my car. Had to get it buffed out. It looks fine now thank god.

My favorite thing to watch are people at gas station car washes using a community push broom that's in a giant plastic bin filled with dirty water and soap labeled "pre-wash". These fools get that broom thing and scrub their paint with it before driving into the brushed automatic car wash

I'll see your broom at the car wash and raise you a broom at an airfield.

I was asked to come take a look at a plane collection, combination of both regular use and show stuff b/c the owner was not happy about how his planes were looking and wanted me to sit thru his guys routine to see if I could find room for improvement.

The "EXPERT DETAILER" they had washing everything would fill his pressure washer canister with Palmolive dish soap. When I asked him why -

"It has moisturizers in it that are good for the paint and keep it from getting too hard"

He'd start scrubbing the plane down with a big flocked nylon brush/broom, and when the soap got thin, would take the broom and rub it on the ground under the plane to get more foam.

When I tried to explain to him thats why everything was scratched he said that the scratches were from other guys using wax on the planes. According to him -

"Because wax is from trees it has seeds and other small stuff in it that when you rub it in makes scratches, wax is bad for paint."

At that point I pretty much just threw my hands up and walked away.
