Downshift to pass.

Hey I'm new to driving a manual. When cruising on the highway and downshifting to do an aggressive pass, how fast can I be going to downshift to 3rd safely?

If you're cruising on the highway, 4th is a better option. 3rd will get you in trouble REALLY fast. With the v8 you'll be upwards of 100 in no time

It depends on how fast you want or need to pass. Fourth gets the job done most of the time. But if you need to make it happen then dropping to third will make it happen in a hurry. For me third gear is an awesome gear with the LS3. I love the way the car pulls when you wind out third. And to specifically answer your question. If I drop to third to do a pass on a two lane road for instance I'm normally doing it at somewhere around 50 -60 because I'm stuck behind a slow car and have found a clear safe passing area to overtake. You can downshift to third a little north of 100 mph. But if you are going that fast already why in the world would someone be needing to downshift?

Any time I downshift to 3rd at speed on the highway, I tend to hear an "oh shit" from my co-pilot..

You know what I'm talking about.. You're sitting right at my power levels with the same blower..

I can't imagine what even more power would feel like.. This thing feels like the engine wants to pull out of the bay as it sits now..
