They started it years ago because (a) all the employees wanted those weeks off for summer vacation and they could'nt let everybody go and still run the plant and (b) as was said, there are some maintenance/tooling issues that can only be done while the line is down, so they schedule all of those issues to be taken care of while the line is down for that period and the employees are happy because they got to take their vacations during prime time.
Well, then lots of the suppliers jumped on the same schedule too because their main customer (GM) was shut down anyway. I found out the hard way that its a very bad time to do serious damage to a big block on your boat....because everybody is shut down and you can't get any parts. And yes, I'm pretty sure its in the union contract anyway. I doubt that in 1968 GM cared about making their assembly line employees happy and shutting the plant down by choice. The union probably fought to have it put in the contract.

Standard plant shut-down is 2 weeks each summer. Happens in nearly every plant of the big 3 and has for some time. I suspect that no MY change over and hot sales means this one is only scheduled for 1 week. July 1 is Canada Day afterall. There is other holidays in the world beyond those celebrated in the good 'ol USofA

Quite possible but makes no business sense at this time. Even if the factory has been up and running for months now. It's not like they have been building cars at full speed since last June July. This is GMs one hot car right now and to stop production for even one week would cost them roughly $61,250,000 in sales 350 cars a day * 5 days * 35000 dollars. Personally it won’t affect me since my car should be built in the next month. Anyhow If it’s true I feel for those that will be waiting. Lastly everyone needs time off to relax.

I work at a Honda factory plant and ours is the same exact time and we are not union, its free paid vacation mandatory shut down every year it doesn't even take away your vacation hours. im off from June 27th- July 12th.
Nothing to worry about its standerd in factory work. has everything to do with good quality and business so i wouldn't complain...i would rather have them do it then not....from a business standpoint it does make sense you just have to look at the whole picture months down the road not just that one week. They will probable 'fine tune' the process to where they will be able to make more camaros in one day.....That is what happens at our factory...our numbers usually go up after they mess around with procedure and speed it up at this time. I always come back and they have new robots taking care of the little things to speed up the initial procedure and stuff like that....if anything the camaros will be litterally flying out much faster after this then they are now. |

Hell yes Zedder. All of the paint jobs that I have seen are absolutely stunning. Great job. Come down to TX and I will treat you to a steak dinner and a cold beer myself. BTW, thanks again for the great work.

I am glad to hear the one week shutdown is only a scheduled shut down week, rather than an attempt by GM to slow production on the Camaro. I would like to think that GM will have a hard time keeping up with the demand for the Camaro this year. They need a strong selling car to give them a shot in the arm, and I think Camaro can be that car!

Semi-annual plant shutdown, actually...for line maintenance/retooling etc. Christmas shutdown, as well, for roughly 2 weeks.
Would you not treat your new Camaro to at least two maintenance visits per year? Same with the plants that make 'em... |

typical plant shutdown is for retooling to accomidate the next model year changeover. since the Camaro is already a 2010 and didn't get up and going until March, why would there be a shutdown?
i would think they would just keep working that line with no shutdown. as far as vacations go..........please........like thats the only time of the year you guys can take vacation! GET BACK TO WORK!
