My dad taught me. He was cool and let me drive when I was big enough to touch the pedals, not in traffic of course, but in parking lots, and pull the car up in the driveway, he believed in teaching us little punks when we were really young. He was the same with guns. "Teach em when they're small and they won't be dumb when they're big!"

When I hit 16 I was ready for the road.

You are lucky man, I can genuinely say that I envy you. I had no one to teach me to drive or anything regarding cars, I had to go around finding friends that would help me out instead!

My dad owns an automotive shop and was also into drag racing. The only life I know is a mechanics life, even in the military Im a mechanic. Very little if any of my knowledge and experience came from the military though. Mostly it was from watching and helping my dad when I was growing up.

My dad taught me about both as well. Funny that now two of my favorite things are guns and cars, lol.

My father, a mechanic, bought me my first tool box from Sears when I was 11 years old. That was in 1963. It's been love ever since.

Reading forums, internet articles, and service manuals.

Still don't know as much as I need to, but certainly on the right track.

How did I become interested in cars?
My mom- GM executive
My dad- Ford executive
My grandfather- Ford engineer
My uncle- Chrysler executive
As you can see, cars have been a part of my life since I was born.

Modding and working on them really came from reading the forums and getting advice from the members. Nobody knows these cars better than the people that own them and do most of there own work. So just read, search and ask questions. Soon you'll be annoying the techs at your local dealership by having more knowledge than them.

Had some friends that dirt track raced when I was fifteen so I got into that and started racing. Started by working on the car and learning everything I could, then raced it, and it was all downhill from there

All real men know about cars! It's in their DNA.

You have to be mechanically inclined and just like cars. I ave been a car nut since I was 3 when cars were cars and not some ugly buzzy econo boxes roamed the streets but just American Iron.

Back in the day, car forums (believe it or not) actually had technical information and discussion on them. Good discussions about specs and doing the work yourself.

Today, everything is social media / fanboy nonsense barely related to the car.

Go to Amazon.com

They have a lot of good books on building/rebuilding LS engines and car guides that can help you learn a lot.

When I got my first car at 17 a 74 Malibu Classic I blew the engine doing stupid stuff. I lost my dad at a very early age, so did not have him to show me what to do. My best friend and his brother were older than me, and they showed me. He gave me a 350 bored 30 over for nothing, and told me that now I have to learn what to do. We did it all in my back yard in about 3 days. Been working on them ever since...
