Mini tubbing

Hey all.

I've been considering having my 2010 mini tubbed and I was hoping some of you could chime in with any "cons". I was going to go the supercharger route, but considering my car will never see the strip, adding more HP would be a waste. I plan on reaching out to Back Bay Customs to talk about the project. My sole reason for doing this is the look. However, I will not go as far as notching the frame rails to accommodate wider tires.
From what I've researched so far, besides the fabrication, there is suspension work that needs to be done. I'm hoping what I've done already, see below, covers it.

CUSTOM BUILT REAR END ASSEMBLY WITH POSI MOD BILLET CAPS

RING PINION BEARINGS SEALS
ENERGY SUSPENSION BUSHINGS EXCHANGE PROGRAM
JRE PUMPKIN
DSS 1400 HP Axle
ADJUSTABLE TOE LINKS
REAR TRAILING ARMS
SUBFRAME BUSHINGs
EIBACH PRO -KIT LOWERING SPRINGS

So what do you folks think? Pitfalls? Overwhelming reason(s) not to do it?

Mike

Save some money and just squeeze in the largest wheels/tires you can find.

You remove your tiny rear wheel wells and replace them with big giant wheel tubs.*

Do a ten inch rim then stretch as big a tire as you can

I think that would be a way expensive project and you would probably run into structural and or rear suspension geometry issues with the 5th gen, You can easily fit a 20X11 rim w/315s on in stock configuration. IMO you would be better off to do a wide body kit or custom flares on the rear quarters if you want to go wider.

Thanks for the input. I'll do some more homework and let you all know what I come up with.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike bud....honestly its your car, do with it what you want. But you quoted that a supercharger would be a waste of horse power. Well my question is what in the world would you get out of tubbing your car...other than major stress to the engine transmission and everything else connected to it.

I would absolutely throw a supercharger on that thing. OR start doing some major cosmetic work!

but like i said your car, your money, do with how you please

Your input, "other than major stress to the engine transmission and everything else connected to it." is exactly what I am looking for since I have no experience regarding the cons of tubbing. I am considering doing it purely for looks, however, if I can get big ol' fat tires out back without tubbing, I'd certainly go that route also.

Mike

I have 315/35/20s on the back of mine...i think they are about the largest you can go without them sticking out. However they dont look even close to the look your going for.

I dont see you as the type for doing hard launches all the time and burnouts so the stress on the motor and trans would be much less.

Heres my tires...its wide but not exactly what your looking for.
These are on 11" rims. Stock 20s will not fit these tires

Tubbing your car is NOT going to put major stress on everything else. If anything, tubbing will most likely put LESS stress on things because you are probably going to have to add structure (lack of a better word) to the car and make some things much more solid

The only way you are going to get added stress, is because you will end up with more traction. Anytime you just even add more tire under your rear you get that and millions upon millions of people do that every day with no problems.

You really need to talk to people that have done this stuff to their cars. This is a pretty common thing on first gen Camaros and now there are more second gens coming into the fold also.

You are probably going to get a lot of uninformed opinions on this forum. Not that they are trying to misdirect you, but they might just not know any better.

Your best bet is to talk to Paul at Back Bay and let him explain things to you. They are going to be able to fill you in better than almost anyone on here. Great shop and even a better bunch of guys up there. I say this from talking to them at a few shows and they even invited us to a personal shop tour and open house for our 2011 Northeast Rod Run
