The LT1 is actually really easy to work around. Called a few shops and they outlined the cam swap is really really easy.

"Unlike the LS engines, a cam in the new LT1/LT4 engines is a bit more extensive...to say the least. Similar to some late model LS engines is the addition of VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and AFM/DOD (Active Fuel Management/Displacement on Demand). Both the LT1 and LT4 engines have these features. There are some aftermarket camshafts designed to work with the AFM system, but for this project we chose to delete DOD for greater power and reliability. We chose to retain VVT since it works well and provides the driver with a broad powerband, even with a larger than stock camshaft. The DOD is deleted by removing the cylinder heads, and changing out the lifters. We chose to go with tie bar lifters from Lunati instead of using the lifter and tray option that comes from the factory...again for added strength and reliability on this high revving engine. The cam sproket on a VVT equipped engine adjusts camshaft position on the fly. Because the camshaft we're installing has a much larger duration and lift value, we have to limit the amount of retard/advance the phaser can add to avoid any piston to valve clearance issues. We take the phaser apart, and install a COMP Cams phaser limiter kit - something we've used for years. Probably the biggest difference between the LT and LS stuff is the fact that the oil pan has to be removed to gain access to the cam gear, timing chain, and oil pump...thanks GM! This adds significant time to the job, and some added materials too. It's not necessarily harder, just more time consuming which adds cost. GM also decided to eliminate gaskets between the pan and block, as well as the front timing cover. Instead, they use a high strength GREY sealant. Again, this has us asking "why GM? Why?" More mess to deal with the reinstalling...oh well. Reminds me of all the small and big blocks I have put together over the years!" |

Wow headers intake and cam are putting down 517hp to the wheels? That is a nice and easy jump in power and sounds like a beast!

So what's the work around? Leave VVT? Manuals don't have DOD, so that's not a concern.
