Anyone Replaced the Trunk Seal DIY?

I got a new trunk weatherstrip to replaced the original. Looks like a simple remove old, install new BUT If you see the attached pic, there is a piece of rubber line cut at two ends.

What is this for?. Am I supposed to removed those? Please advise.

Does your old weatherstrip have them. Is so remember the location of them. Take pictures as a guide to put back on.

Thanks. I haven't checked the old one cause I'm afraid to remove it without knowing if the replacement one will give me issues. Just wanna make sure. Any other opinions /suggestions /ideas?

The part number is 22923286. Do I need to cut those off?.. The original does NOT have them.

Kinda surprised no other input on this. Maybe its there to keep shape while shipping. If your old one didnt have it. I dont see an issue taking it out. As long as its not molded with the rubber.

If it is what I think it is, once the weatherstripping is on the vehicle you pull that piece out slowly working around the perimeter. It will pull the weatherstripping over the metal flange. Typically pulling at about 90 degrees to the strip.
