Auto insurance
How does a insurance company verify how many miles I drive?
All companies I know of ask how much you drive but a few I spoke to said they verify that number. I am mainly asking in reference to GIECO. Does anyone here use GIECO? Do they ask you for proof of your annual milage? |

I've has Gieco for years, can't recall them ever asking me that...maybe it's something new? All I remember them asking is if the cars were daily drivers, pleasure only, driven by someone under 21, and things like that.

I give USAA a guess on how many miles a year I drive each of my cars. One year my wife's Tahoe went over by like 1500 miles, they didn't say anything and didn't adjust the average milage.

Normally it's just an estimation

My neighbor works at an insurance company (the one I'm insured with) and told me never to be honest about that unless you're in the low range. I asked after I was on a survey they sent and my rates went up. She was able to change it back. She said I didn't even have to answer it, nothing would have changed. That on an existing policy though not a new one I was trying to get.
They just use that as a way to hike up the rates. The car is either insured or it's not regardless of mileage you drive it.

When you register your car and or go for your plate renewal you report your mileage.

I've had Geico for many years (Love 'em, BTW). The online renewal/ change/ edit/ add always ASKS for that mileage estimation, but that's as far as it's ever gone. Besides... it would be an expensive and complicated procedure for them to verify mileage for every--- or even a small fraction--- of their customers.

After further research...
Most insurance companies let you estimate up to a point, but eventually ask for documentation. Example- gieco will take your word for milage unless you tell them you drive under 9k miles a year at which time they will ask you to prove it. |
