Bulletin on Rotors

Hello all, I hope this finds you well! I have just over 13k miles on my 2017 2SS. I started getting a vibration in the front end when braking above, say, 55-60 mph about 300 miles ago. I took my car to the dealership for an oil change and to have the vibration checked out.

When I talked to the service tech he said that "GM will not stand behind rotors at all." I said, "that's fine, just check it out, I want to make sure it is in fact the rotors." I was thinking of upgrading to slotted rotors anyway.

I get a call the next morning with the service tech asking if they can keep the car one more day and that he had in fact found a service bulletin on rotors for Gen 6 Camaros. He said "there is an issue with the rotors, we are going to turn and redip them." He went on to say that this would be a one time deal, the rotors are only capable of being turned one time. Later adding that I may want to look into upgrading my rotors.

I've searched for a bulletin released on this rotor issue and have yet to find one, does this sound legit. Does GM typically not release service bulletins to the public? Also, does GM or anyone for that matter make a carbon ceramic rotor, similar to the one on C7 Z06 for the Camaro?

Thanks in advance, have a great weekend.

Anytime you feel vibration in the steering wheel when braking, the front rotors are warped.

Not really a warranty issue, more of a wear and tear.

They're doing you a solid cutting (resurface) them under warranty.

However, one cut and done is bs. There's a minimum thickness stamped into rotors.

You use a micrometer to measure.

TSB - I doubt it.

Lastly, I hope you find the upgraded ones you want. That's your longer-term solution.

So I have gone through two sets of rotors already on my A8 6k miles. The car is driven in the city only 6 mile commute round trip. I have never had this issue with previous vehicles ( Mercedes E-class BMW 5 and Audi A5 or my silverado) I bought this car brand new, pretty sure the vibration is back again, will be getting a 3rd set of rotors soon. Soooo, not sure how this could be my fault, but geez, sure is starting to look that way. luckily my dealer has replaced them each time, saying there really is no way I should be causing this issue so quickly. So they have been covering under factory defect.

Camaro 5, thanks for the response, I'll be looking for a slotted replacement. The one thing I'm just unsure of is why they warped so quickly, I haven't driven this car hard at all. I've read on this forum of others having similar issues... it'b be nice that if this was a bad part GM would just issue a statement and replace them with a rotor that will last a bit longer. Thanks again, have a great day!

Cali85SS, thanks for the response. I'm sorry that you're having similar issues with your rotors. Please post again if there is a resolution or if they just keep throwing rotors at it. Thanks again, have a great day!

Just a note: Stop and go city driving is the worst thing. Not enough air flow to cool rotors, lots of braking.

The tech was wrong, GM will turn the rotors during the 1st 7500 miles or 12 months if they are warped.

Id do a bed in procedure before i turned the rotors.. cant hurt to try it really. You may just have uneven pad material on the rotor - it will make it feel like its warped when this happens.

i'm at 12.5k miles and starting to notice vibration when braking. I am more likely too easy on the brakes as I rarely do any hard braking.

i'll try some bedding procedures but it is probably too late.

Sounds like the rotors are already too thin to begin with if they are warping so soon. Having them turned will only make it happen sooner, unless the real issue is material depositing on the rotors.

Rotors dont physically warp, its a term used when there is brake pulsation.

Its actually to do with the brake pads.

They get too hot and transfer material to the rotor which then cools off and creates a high spot and thus the vibration.

Cuting a rotor simply removes this material from the rotor, the same could be done by hand with sanding. But if the pads are of the wrong temperature range the pulsation will happen again.

OP, if the brakes start to pulsate again find pads with higher heat rating.

Thanks for the link to the Brake Myth article. I learned a lot, especially not to top off the brake fluid reservoir which I have done in the past. Thanks!
