The mail slot is so small it probably wouldn't do a whole lot for engine cooling but I guess every little bit helps. Plus, you would want to direct the airflow to the stock airbox/aftermarket CAI.

I've considered getting another type of mesh grill, t-rex, etc., but I was just thinking it would look good completely open. As I researched other threads I learned that by removing it completely, it wouldn't let water and/or other debris get to the engine because of the panels that are behind it, so to me this is a good thing knowing that it's not a direct access into the engine compartment although it won't do anything to increase air flow. I'm just wanting to do it for cosmetic reasons. Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, I was thinking that if it's called a "mail slot" but it's actually blocked off, why not unblock it and make it a mailbox! Think about it...I could deposit my own mail in the slot and then deliver it to the location myself, therefore saving money on postage (LOL).
