It works by shifting into Manual mode, and then you drive it like a automatic manual. If you want to change gears, you slide the gear level up or down. Its really not as crazy as I thought when I leased my Altima. Who knows, I may go manual actually use a clutch when i shift.

I think I'd like a torque gauge, but tranny temp is definitely way more useful if you have an automatic. OTOH, if you have the manual, tranny temp is pretty useless. Quote:

My ScanGauge II can display torque as reported by GM's extensions to OBDII (it's horribly inaccurate; I think I need to tweak the code it uses).

Maybe I'm remembering that wrong...I could swear I read all about it being in the first gen.
If that's wrong, can anyone cite any other prior art that's more definitive than the Torque readout on my ScanGauge II?

I would have to see that to believe it. I imagine that was a gimmicky fake readout, the technology to get real-time readouts of the torque being applied to the drivetrain is not something that would have been imagined 40 years ago.

going back to the TAPSHIFT, i know it was said that you could shift from M to D at speed but, and this may be a stupid question or may have been answered, but can you go from D- M at speed as well?

dont see why you wouldnt be able to. it would just leave you in whatever gear you were in when you switched to M mode.
