It took longer than I thought because the three bolts off the back of the intake are hard to get to but still it's a pretty easy swap.

Exactly. Opening up the flow anywhere should show some gains (if you don't F it up). However, the ultimate is to get all the parts to flow to the maximum potential without interferring with each other.

Is there a valley tray between the two heads? It almost looks like both heads are a single piece? I can't tell by the picture.

The valley is covered by a foam piece, I assume to reduce noise.
