Bracket Racing Explanation

During test and tune you will figure out how fast your car runs. Then you will pick a time that you think your car will run and write it on the window with shoe polish or similar. You can write any time you like on the window, but if you run faster than that time you break-out or lose, so you would pick a time slightly lower or faster than you expect to run.

The purpose of this is so all cars can come to the line equal... a handicap system if you will. So if a V6 has 15.5 on his window and a V8 lines up against him with 13.0 the V6 will get to leave the starting line 2.5 seconds ahead of the V8. And the V8 will have to catch up and pass before the finish line. This can create some very close races at the end.

It is very important that you run a number very close to your breakout time without going faster. If the V6 runs 15.53 he is going to be very hard to beat assuming he had a good reaction time at the line. Reaction time also becomes very important in Bracket Racing because a slow reaction or start only gives your opponent some extra time against you. So if you nail a good reaction time and run just a bit slower than your dial in time you will do very well.

If the V6 ran a 15.495 he breaks out or loses because he ran faster than the time on his window. You can change or adjust this time each run if you like. To be safe he might put 14.5 on his window but would then be giving his opponent and extra second. Consistency is the name of the game here and practice will get you there.

Hope that helps...

Toss me in that list somewhere, Mlee!

I'm looking forward to the drag racing this year.....and not only because I actually get to drive it, now!

The guys working on the organization of this (and the autocross for that matter), are doing a helluva job! With so much interest, there's a decent level of pressure on these volunteers...but their efforts are going to make a big difference in the driver's experience the day of the show. Thanks, all!!
