I was an M2 (.50 cal) gunner in Iraq in 03' with 1/14 Cav in the very first Stryker BDE. Both the hardest and somehow best year of my life.

From 1998 to 2000 I had the joys of experiencing the highs and lows of weather conditions. I loved the "dry heat" on the summer tarmac in Kuwait to the coldest winter I have ever felt in Korea.

Being a scout platoon leader was almost as awesome as being a tank company commander. I had a 40 man, 10 HMMWV scout platoon - my truck at a MK19 on it! I loved that thing! SCOUTS OUT!

I was in Kuwait, at Camp Arifjan 2004-2005. I never really had a hard assignment, probably doing an overnight guard duty on a wall with no threat, just froze my ass off at night. Yes it did get cold in the desert. I am an 89Bravo, Ammunition Specialist. We supplied, issued and did all the turn in's at the ASP, TSP, and ATP's, up in Camp Virginia we had soldiers up there too.

My toughest assignment was at Fort Knox training new Scout Platoon Leaders. At least new privates know that they don't know anything. You officer types seem to think you know everything already. All in love brother. |

It all paid off, though, I took my scout platoon to Korea for an Operation Foal Eagle exercise and we kicked ass. Did a dismounted infiltration of the enemy's main defensive belt (around the Twin Bridges training area) and called in every enemy position - the battalion ran through the ROKs like $*&% through a goose! Some of my scouts didn't like humping up and down those mountains though, it was an ass kicker. |

i've spent the past 4 months trying to convince my girlfriend to come with me to Rapid City, SD at my next base. her biggest qualm with it is that she hates the cold weather in Korea - that's part of why she moved here... FL in particular. she loves TX & is dreading our next assignment. i've only been in schools up til now, but more-than-likely will be over in the Deid come April

I'm a cold war vet. Luckily the only combat I experienced was fighting frostbite and heatstroke.
My hat is off to those of you who drew a shorter straw than mine. Thank you

I completely agree with you c_LoW! I did three Iraq and 3 Afghanistan tours in which I was injured the last time in Afghanistan and was medically retired. I do miss it although I got a job with the government and the military which definitely helped with the separation.
