Snow+salt bags+ SS = how much weight limit?????
Im going to pick up my SS from Jannety racing from getting a 470 package installed. They are calling for 2-6 inches of snow, So for the 3hr trip back I bought 600lbs worth of 50lb salt bags to put in my trunk for traction. How much weight can I put in the trunk safely??? Any other suggestions also welcome.

I think on the door plaque or owners manual there is a gvw allowance that specifies how much weigh the car can handle loaded with passengers and cargo.
From what I researched it is "Gross Vehicle Weight Rating : 2151 kg (4743 lb)" http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18983 As long as those bags and your bodyweight does not exceed that weight, you should be ok.

Do you have snow tires? That's probably the most important thing. Starting in 2nd gear may help, too.

Agreed...if u don't have snow tires you will have more than weight issues to worry about.

sounds like a lot of weight! I am old school driving RWD back in the 70's. too much weight will make it slip out in the corners. I might use a couple hundred pounds max! Really just think of keeping the gas tank full. There is a lot of weight with that. Drive it down to half tank and refill...

600 lbs is way overkill. 3 or 4 bags max.

I put 360 in the back of my truck for the winter......600 in the back of he Camaro will most likely exceed the max. Gross weight.

A Camaro driver already has more weight over the rear wheels than many FWD cars have over their front tires....Personally, I don't see the need for any extra weight - it's only going to reduce fuel economy.
Snow tires will make the single-biggest difference when driving in the snow. |

You can probably put enough weight in the trunk to make it more dangerous to drive.
Here's the way I look at winter traction: it is far more important to be able to slow down and turn than it is to get going. Adding hundreds of pounds of ballast to the back end will make it harder for the car to stop in an emergency, and all that weight back there could lead to some strange handling characteristics if you ever start to loose control. If it were me, I'd probably just avoid driving the car in the snow altogether -unless I had snow tires. And if I had snow tires ... I wouldn't even bother with ballast.

You better hope to god that the highway is cleared. I went sideways today switching lanes as slowly as I could at 40mph with very little snow... It felt like a mission getting home from downtown and it was only a 40 min drive with 1-2 inches of snow...
