The camaro is detroit muscle to me and weight does matter. Same holds true of Mustangs and Challengers in my mind anyway. All of these cars are getting to heavy. Just look at the Gt500. Talk about over weight and over priced.
My 03 Mustang I thought was too heavy when I bought it and now it looks like a fly weight. Im not going to be happy Im afraid with the weight issue. I really like the car overall but this really troubles me. Perhaps Im not realistic and the next mustangs will weigh 2 tons as well. |

well the only thing that im midly worried about concerning the 2010 mustangs, would be the "weight loss" program they are talking so much about

My 2009 Corvette is going to be built in one week in Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA, by American workers and an American company.
I was a 5th gen fanatic until the curb weight was leaked. Believe what you want about the weight, the facts will be out soon. They did not magically remove a bunch of weight from the Zeta platform when they designed the Camaro around it. The Canadian CAW has handled themselves poorly IMO. Blockading GM offices? Bye bye! They also are not going to magically cut the $40,000 G8 GXP price by too much for a similarly equipped Camaro SS. Maybe $38000? The Camaro is a great looking car inside and out and I'm sure it will be a hoot to drive. Just not for me, to each his own. Take care, and enjoy.

Two reasons the Camaro always makes sense for me. Four seats let me cart the family around better and well to be honest they cost less than Corvettes. With respect to the Camaro's weight, we all have to remember we are not talking about an expensive exotic. This is a car that in base form will be priced competitively with the Malibu. Hell you could option out a Cobalt SS that would exceed the base Camaro's price (I'm speculating since we don't have final pricing but I'm guessing I'm correct on this). Additionally one can NOT compare the weight of this car to cars from 10, 20 or 30 years ago. The government mandates crash worthiness (adds weight). Consumers, with few exceptions demand comforts such as AC, PW, PL and powerful sound systems (all add weight). Since 75-80% of customers order these options, it is cheaper to equip all vehicles with them. I have no doubt that without the above, GM could produce a 3,000lb/400 hp Camaro for $25-30 grand. And lastly, let's not forget the Camaro is roughly 200-400 lbs lighter than the Challenger. Hell it compares to the GT-R with it's carbon fiber this and that. I'll end my time on the soapbox with this, GOOD JOB GM TEAM!! |

The disappointing thing about the weight is the number of people who are blaming it on the Camaro Team and the GM engineers. The problem is the general public, they demand safety (can't blame them) They won't buy a car without a 4 or 5 star crash rating and are constantly pushing for stricter safety regulations.
Also, cars that don't have all the creature comforts get crossed off peoples lists pretty quick. If you want to see lighter cars start telling your family and friends to quit worrying about safety and features when choosing a car. I am sure GM did all they could to keep the weight down at the price point. |
