Most repair shops say that shocks/struts should be changed every 50k miles

Shocks will last the life of the car, do you mean "struts"?

I was also FORCED to get coil-over after about 1200 miles ;-D

I wouldn't know. I've never owned a car long enough to wear out the tires let alone the shocks. LOL
I wonder if you could do a 1LE conversion to your car. That would be cool. |

Hey MBS, there are a ton of factors that can contribute towards your factory shocks wearing out over time, but I don't think it is easy to even speculate on how long they will last. Things like how rough your roads are, the climate you live in, the amount of abuse they may or may not get on the street/track (if you take it to the track), and overall milage are all contributors towards how soon they will wear out.
Either way, I would not be concerned with your factory shocks wearing out for a very long time. If you are looking to upgrade your shocks however... that is where we have you covered for sure. |

Suspension wear is insidious. It is incremental. The wear starts with the first mile you drive. As you accumulate miles, the dampers accumulate wear. Since the wear is incremental and cumulative it is almost imperceptible and you have become accustomed to the feel. At 50K your struts will be completely functional, but on the down side of the useful life cycle. Your 5th Gen would feel good to you, becuase that is how it feels every day. At 100K they won't be leaking but they will be very tired.
Hop into a hermetically sealed, shielded from all forms of aging, brand spanking new zero mile identical Camaro at 25, 50, 75 and 100K you would clearly feel a difference. It isn't just the struts, it is bushes, ball joints, bearings and steering gear. Fortunately there are quite a few suspension addicts in the 5th Gen world creating a steady supply of new and almost new take off struts. If you can get your hands on a set of FE4 take off struts they would be a clear upgrade over brand new 6 units. |
