I agree, you have to respect 'the beast', no matter what 'beast' it is.
On top of that, I really like that Dodge took an initiative to offer an SRT8 driving school (not sure if they still do it) when you purchased an SRT8 vehicle so you know how to handle the car, not necessarily just with everything off but as a "hey, this is what the car is capable of, this is how you control it if the situation arises". Of course that isn't going to solve all the crashes/tomfoolery but I believe it does help to know how your car is going to react in certain situations and how to correct the behavior. I still haven't gone, let's say "balls to the wall" in my car simply because I think it is stupid to do in public and I've felt Stabilitrak and traction control work in unison in some normal situations (keep in mind, I'm coming out of an AWD SUV to a RWD 400HP performance car), personally. I'd love the opportunity to have a giant open parking lot or a track with a professional besides me giving me direction as to what to do.

My uncle Garibay asked me the other day, "Why do they make cars go so fast if they can get you in trouble or killed?" I asked my uncle, "Why do they make hard liquor so strong if it can get you in trouble or killed?" Then I added that it's because it's what consumers want. Anyone who drives responsibly can drive any car with any power and be safe just like people can drink responsibly no matter how strong the booze is. He agreed and added, "and never mix drinking with driving." I replied, "Amen to that!"

Great posts.
Anyone who turns off the "nannies" on the street is just plain stupid! There's absolutely no reason to, and it has to be a very deliberate act...it's not just natural or a habit. It takes a concious effort to turn them off with where they are placed and having to hold the button for some time.

I have been to NASA and SCDA events. Both of them require an instructor in the car (regardless of what you tell them your ability level is) until the comfortable with your ability to control your car and the track. Then they sign you off to move up in groups. They keep the advanced, intermediate and beginner drivers in their own run groups and have some great instructors that teach you a lot more than you thought you already knew! |

If anyone wishes to turn off all of the "nannies", do so freely at the track - he'll receive no argument from me there. While whizzing by me and others on the freeway, it behooves them in having such power at their disposal to have respect for others and have the wisdom to utilize everything at their disposal to aid in maintaining control over their vehicle. After all, those "nannies" are there for a reason: to help keep our beautiful cars in one piece as much as they are there to help keep us alive to enjoy them.

Meh I'm more concerned with the wannabe race car drivers on the road and granny who dont see too well anymore. The ZL1 could be the most defensive driving kit you can buy for under $60k.

Nannies are only as good as the driver allows them to be....nothing is idiot proof.

Sorry to go off topic, mods feel free to delete if inappropriate.....
I'm a bit worried with the announced 200 MPH capability of that "other" car, that there are going to some massive crashes when idiots try to make a Youtube video of it doing so. |
