Arrg, 87 Octane... Sometimes I hate living in Oregon
So,
Here in Oregon, we are not allowed to pump our own gas. So, every gas station has to have payed attendants. Anyway, I went to Shell, asked for Super (92 Ocatane) and went into the the shop for a drink. I should have payed more attention. I came back and saw he was pumping regular (87 octane), it was full at that point. ARRGGGG. Anyway, how careful should I be driving to prevent pinging? Can 87 octane cause damage? Should I add 92 as soon as possible to raise the octane (at 1/4 tank perhaps) or just run it dry. I intend to do the fuse pull trick after I refill. |

Did you pay for it? That would have been a free tank of gas for me. It was not what you requested.

Yeah, I'd have had the manager out there explaining why he's trying to screw up my engine (of course it doesn't really 'hurt' it, but it's set for a certain octane and should get it).
I'd definitely have a free tank of gas...at least. |

NJ, and Oregon are the only states that self-service is still outlawed. I've read reasons ranging from: people can't pump their own gas properly to if they repeal the law, lots of attendants will be out of jobs. I think the REAL reason is...it's a damn old law... |

I suppose it provides some minimum wage jobs. (At the cost of higher gas prices to pay for them.) For some reason, some people here like it. I prefer to pump my own, I hate this law. |

So we all know that gas is cheaper in Jersey....I heard that they use the income tax form the gas pump attendants to subsidize gas prices..
seems like a good system to me more jobs+cheaper gas=all around win

I'm sure it's not that much cheaper, certainly not enough where I would let someone else put gas in my car. No thanks! |

I wonder how much cheaper it is when you factor in the tip...even a single dollar can raise the price of a Camaro fill-up by 5.5 cents.......

Whatever he makes per hour, only a fraction goes back as taxes. The difference needs to be covered by raising the price of gas. This is the stupidest law in the world. Absolutely retarded. I hate it. |

It would be safer to pump your own gas because you would stay by the pump where as the attendant will walk away with the pump going as he goes to put the nozzle in the car at the next pump. Also safer if the attendant isn't smart enough to know the difference between the 87 button and 92 button.
