Isuzu Motors America stop selling vehicles in the U.S.

By DALE JEWETT

Isuzu Motors America said on Wednesday that it will stop selling vehicles in the U.S. market. The decision is effective as of Thursday, Jan. 31, the company said in a press release.

Isuzu vehicles in the U.S. market--the Ascender SUV and i-series pickups--are reworked versions of General Motors vehicles. The Ascender is reworked from the Chevrolet TrailBlazer/GMC Envoy, and the pickups are rebadged from the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon.

Isuzu sold 7098 vehicles in the United States in 2007, down 17.6 percent from a year earlier.

Isuzu said it would continue to honor warranties and encourage its dealers to continue as service-only centers.

Wow. That's big news. Looks like one less manufacturer, maybe? I mean, the are rebadged, but does GM build them, sell them to Isuzu, and then they rebadge them? Or what?

Kinda makes me a little sad. My first car was a 1986 Isuzu Trooper 2. 2 door SUV, strait 4, and 4X4. Great fun in Alaska, more torque than i needed (slow as hell though). Could fold up the rear seats and get a twin mattress in the back for camping and such with the GF.

Ah well, in the end it was a piece of automotive failure anyway, tranny got rebuilt twice while I owned it. But at least it was a learning experience, learned how to drop and replace/rebuild engines and trannies. Twice even, the new engine I bought blew a casting plug after 500 miles, thank god for warranties.

Wink

i always thought it was kinda funny that Isuzu was the ones who built the first compact trucks for Chevy (remember the LUV) and then Chevy re badges first the S series trucks as the Hombre and then later the Colorado as the I series. Ford did this as well as the first compact trucks the courier was by Mazda and now the Mazda trucks are made by ford (re badged rangers). and the Mitsubishi Raider is just a Dakota but unlike the other re badged trucks it shares almost no sheet metal with the Dakota, only the glass i believe.

So does this hurt GM in any way?. Do the isuzu vehiclies count as sales for GM?

if isuzu isn't selling cars in the US anymore and they are really GM vehicles in disguise, will GM sales number go down as well? I'm not articulating this very well.

If any one has any thoughts I'd be interested.
