Chevy Camaro GT4.R Race Car is Coming
Update:
Chevy Is Building a Camaro GT4 Race Car This race-ready Camaro will fight Mustangs and Caymans in IMSA's Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge and the Pirelli World Challenge. GT4 racing is so hot these days. Ford, Porsche, McLaren are all contesting new cars in various GT4 series, with Mercedes-AMG and BMW soon to join in on the fun. You can add Chevrolet to that list, with the just-announced Camaro GT4.R. While we don't have a photo of the actual car yet, Team Chevy released a rendering and a teaser video on Wednesday morning. The sound you're hearing is a race-spec version of the Camaro SS's 6.2-liter V8, connected to a six-speed sequential gearbox made by Xtrac. Pratt & Miller, the racing firm that develops Chevy's Corvette race cars, is helping out with the engineering work on the Camaro GT4.R. To generate downforce, the GT4.R uses a new rear wing and a new splitter and dive planes at the front. In addition to the gearbox, Xtrac provided the GT4.R's limited-slip rear differential and traction control system. The dampers are adjustable coilover units from Ohlins, and the adjustable ABS braking system is from Brembo. Chevy's teaser video says we'll see the Camaro GT4.R in competition this year, but no specific date is given. A representative for Chevy told Road & Track we'd see it in person soon. It's eligible for IMSA's Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge (CTSC) series, the GTS class in Pirelli World Challenge, and other GT4 series around the world. This isn't Chevy's first GT4-spec Camaro either. The fifth-generation Camaro gave birth to the Camaro GS and Z/28.R, both of which competed in CTSC and World Challenge from 2010 to 2016. With increasing manufacture involvement, GT4 is quickly becoming a very exciting class. We can't wait to see this up against the Mustang and all of its European rivals. Video screenshots by Sledgehammer70: Original post: I was watching the Rolex 24HR race qualifying session on IMSA TV and the announcers were commenting on a rumor that Stevenson Motorsports will debut a GT4 race version of the Camaro at the Sebring Race. This may well be the place and time for the public debut of the new Z/28.

The talk is they hope to have the car ready to run in the Continental Tire series at Sebring with Stevenson just as they did with the 5thGen Camaro.

Subscribed because I'm eager to see what they run...no doubt will have a ZL1/Z/28 face for airflow....but what else?
And, as ever.....coordinated debut with something special? |

The GT4 Mustang had very similar aero to the Camaro prototype we've been seeing. It would make sense that the big aero car and the GT4 car were developed and shown together.

Don't get too excited. Sebring isn't until mid March.

The Z/28 prototypes we have seen already look like a GT4 car. The aero set up is very similar to the GT4 Mustang. The GT4 Camaro may be a race prepped Z/28.

That would explain the two models (with and without wing) being seen together for testing. One is the GT4 spec for teams and the other is the consumer Z/28?

FS1 is showing the Weathertech Challenge and probably the Continental Tire Challenge, which is the one using the GT4 specs.

This is a scenario that could certainly explain the spy shots of a car with and a car without the big spoiler. |

They did debut them together in Detroit 2014. However, it seems that Camaro is making it's public debuts in different venues than the traditional showings. Sebring might make sense for the Z/28.

I'm sure the car we saw without the wing was just for road testing. There were ZL1 prototypes seen without the rear spoiler.

No street version. You want a Z/28, you're buying a race car.
