Slick vs Drag Radial = no improvement

Just wanted to post this quick so you guys would no what the deal was. The car being used is an A6, still with the L99,(no ls3 conversion), TVS 2300, stock gears and converter. The car makes 550 rwhp/ 550 rwtq. With the 18" M & H drag radials the car cut 1.60 to 1.67 60's every time out. I changed over to 17" Bogarts with a 28"x10" Hoosier Slicks and the car still only cuts a 1.65 60'. 11 attempts with both set-ups. I think the problem is that I can't leave any harder than 1450 rpms otherwise the car pushes itself down the track. I mean literally. With the front tires completely locked, the car will push itself forward. It happened a lot at Jannetty's rental this past Friday. So I would say that unless you have a stall don't waste your money on a 17" set-up. Its just not worth it when for half the price you can do just as well, if not better. Best of luck fellas!

Its because of the stock stall. But once stalled them bias ply sidewalls will take alot of the cars beating not transfering it to the drive line like radial tires will.

The car ran between 11.0 and 11.2 @ 122-124 mph. No improvement anywhere. That's why no slips, nothing gd to show. The temps were 35 degrees warmer than the last time so that didn't help. I know the converter is the culprit. It's holding the car back. Well it did until this week,

I can't. I'm just going to get a stall and put them to the test. You should just order a set. They make them pretty quick.

yea your stock converter is what's killing you.......you need to be able to launch a lot harder to make use of that extra grip.

may i suggest..........3200 stall and a transbrake?

Drive a 4000-4200, really before you go with a small 3k stall. They're plenty bearable and with a lockup clutch drive the same on the highway.

Add a trans cooler!

Keep us informed with your finding on the torque converter options. I'm curios to see more pros and cons for the multi vs single disk setups. I also have found that alot of manufacturers don't give the STR in the specs. I only found this info for Yank and Vigilante.

3600 is way to high for my car. It would def blow the tires off. I don't think it would hook very well with anything above 3k. Jannetty suggested a 2200. I have a call into pro torque. Just waiting now but they claim to have a hot setup for the 2010 camaro.

Call Yank and Vigilante for some info. For one of the best knowledge bases call Neal Chance Torque Converters. A 2200 stall is very low.

This is my < .02 so take it as such:

1) Make sure the converter is still a lockup converter. That will make it 100% streetable.

2) You can never go "up" in stall speed, but you can go down. e.g. If you brake against a converter you effectively can pull it down some. We used to do this and preload the tires and drivetrain. A converter's stall speed is really based on "flashing the converter"

3) Treat your car as a total package. You will want to tune your cars launches with the SUSPENSION, not the engine or converter. There are cars that run in the 7's with IRS.

I am running a 3500/3600 stall with transbrake which is totally streetable. (and the SST has enough torque to kill a horse) You may not want to run that high, but for a whole generation the B&M Holeshot was a 2800-3200 stall converter and the Super Holeshot was a 3500 stall converter and they sold tens of thousands of these on street cars.

Once again, I want to emphasize this is humble opinion only, so call up some chassis/drivetrain pros and get their take.
