I'm not planning on installing the headers myself, so could the shop do the tune for me as well? In general this whole "tuning" thing is a mystery to me, and probably not something I want to tackle myself. I have no problem losing the AFM, and if the tune helps with power, I'm all for it.
I suggest JRE street package. CAI, headers, hf cats, and an SCT tune. All in one package. Read this about an SCT X3 tune from Ted at JRE. Then check out JRE's web site and look for the street package info. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=276696

I have toyed with idea of doing the headers myself. I have the mechanical ability to do it but I have no access to a lift and I don't own any jackstands, or even a jack for that matter. I'm afraid that I'll be buying all this stuff that I'm never going to use again, which is usually what happens when I take on these projects. I really would enjoy tackling it myself if I had everything I needed. Just not really sure what all that is.

Finding a place to get it done is another issue. It's not like I'm going to take it to Midas I live in Leesburg, VA- outside of DC.

Headers, long or shorties, if you live in an emissions free area go straight no cat mid-pipe (or HF cats) and muffler delete. Shop around and it can be all had quite reasonable.

Doing it yourself is easy as already pointed out (4-6 hrs in the driveway). Maybe it's time for the "excuse" to buy a decent jack and some stands? Living in Lessburg there has to be some folks from the forum around the area than can help or point you in the right direction. I used to live in Warrenton and know the area quite well. Post up in the local region part of the forum and see what pops up.

If I'm going to spend the money, I'd rather buy long tube headers, high flow cats, and leave the stock exhaust in place. My questions are:

1) Will the power increase be less than if I replaced the whole exhaust?
2) Will the exhaust tone improve even though the stock exhaust is being used?

As I said, I don't know much about this so if these are stupid questions, sorry. Thanks.
1) The stock cat back flows extremely well, it is just very quiet and heavy. You will not sacrifice power but you will still be hauling around those "trash cans".

2) Yes. It won't be as rowdy as it would be with a more aggressive aftermarket system but you are going to know that some changes have been made.
